I think there may be lower notes than that in "Dead Man". I'd have to listen back to confirm.
Could well be. I'm just curious as this thread is helping me look at Ed's singing in a different way and it's interesting. :)

On Ten, one that comes to mind immediately is Jeremy. Those vocal runs where he isn't singing any actual words are pretty damn difficult. Release is another top vocal, showcasing both Ed's lower register and the higher belted notes in the chorus. There's also very nice falsetto towards the end. Oceans isn't extremely challenging but the transitions into falsetto are very nicely done. Deep is a difficult vocal. Some of the screams are crazy high and that chorus is not easy to sing. Porch is a song which is made memorable purely by Ed's vocal runs. That 'I just need to sayyyyy' part and then the ending. Once is another difficult one. The entire song, especially the chorus, showcases very powerful upper fourth octave singing. There are parts of Alive, Evenflow and Why Go too which are quite difficult to sing.

G♯6 ("Daddy Could Swear, I Declare")
G♯5 ("Do the Evolution")
F5 ("The Wolf")
E5 ("Black", "I've Got a Feeling", "I've Got a Feeling" Rough mix)
E♭5 ("I've Got a Feeling")
D5 ("Love Reign O'er Me", "Dissident", "Deep", "Do the Evolution", "Black")
C♯5 ("Rival", "Baba O'Riley" live, "Do the Revolution" live Seattle 1998)
C5 ("I've Got a Feeling", "Habit", "Daddy Could Swear, I Declare", "Spin the Black Circle")
B4 ("Breakerfall", "Brother", "Blood", "Gonna See My Friend", "Rearviewmirror", "Evacuation", "Alone", "Dirty Frank", "Brother" live, "Light My Fire" live, "Just a Girl", "Spin the Black Circle", "Supersonic", "Life Wasted", "Not for You", "Breath and a Scream", "2,000 Mile Blues", "Breath", "W.M.A.", "Break on Through (To the Other Side)" live)

Significant low notes:

F♯1 ("I'm Still Here")
A1 ("Dream a Little Dream")
B1 ("Dream a Little Dream")
C2 ("I'm Still Here", "Arc")
C♯2 ("All Night", "Breakerfall", "Black, Red, Yellow")
D2 ("Crazy Mary", "Black, Red, Yellow", "Dead Man Walking", "Dirty Frank", "Just a Girl")

G2 ("Long Nights", "Just Breathe", "Elderly Woman Behind the Counter in a Small Town", "Love Boat Captain", "Speed of Sound", "Got Some", "Push Me Pull Me", "Strangest Tribe", "Given to Fly", "Hurt" live)

There's a color code for some of these notes to signify which are full voice (modal), falsetto or non-modal, which are spoken instead of sung, etc. I'll post that later. Off to bed now.

Feels a little weird to count spoken-word.

Yeah, there's a lot of argument over it in circles where people obsess over vocals. It was decided to count spoken word notes as long as they weren't 'fry' because some singers just tend to not showcase their lower register while singing, but they speak quite low. Don't know if that makes sense.

This list was made post Backspacer so it's not updated to include anything from LB.

Would it really matter if you could tell it's not real?

I assume it would sound artificial and contrived. I like the sense that it is warm and real and authentic, it's just that i don't care if the authenticity is real.

Yes. You can probably get a gibbon to fart into a microphone and autotune it to sound like the right note.

And that would make you like it less? I guess I don't care if what I hear is made by autotuned gibbons or robots or humans, if it sounds good it sounds good.

Is there a studio trick for sustaining a note from a vocal?

I'm hearing what might be one on LB

It's really important to me that a bunch of musicians I grew up to love and respect are actually playing their instruments for reals. That includes vocals. Otherwise you could argue that miming is totally awesome as long as it sounds good.
