Bleach, on its own, is a decent record. Fun for what it is. Lots of artists are capable of releasing fairly decent records. Absolutely no one ever mentions it as an example of excellent song writing. If it was the only album kurt cobain ever put out no one would talk about his untapped genius.

Well Zeb, maybe.

You don't think School and Blew are great songs?

Yeah, Blew was pretty good. Certainly not great.

I never liked school.

Love Buzz is good, but that's a cover, isn't it?

The Negative Creep to Mr. Moustache run is kinda fun.

But good god, none of these are songs that qualify you for songwriter of the decade. Blew and About a Girl come the closest. I'm kind of floored that so many people are going to the mat over this album, although I guess it is mostly the usual suspects.

Yeah Love Buzz is a cover.

School and Blew > Breed, Lounge Act, etc, although maybe I overplayed those tracks as a kid.

And Negative Creep! I didn't even bring that up yet! That's a top tier tune, man.

If it's good enough for Velvet Revolver to cover, it's damn well good enough for you, stip.

That is absolutely not true. Lounge Act may be my favorite song on Nevermind, though

Two consequential albums, I should have said. I thought that was obvious.

I will say this about Bleach. None of those songs sound manufactured.

Exactly - the musical merit of Bleach isn't at all relevant to what I was commenting on.

It's almost as though musical appreciation is completely, entirely subjective.

the musical merit or lack thereof is basically what my post was about. Kurt Cobain as a songwriter worth taking seriously is based on two albums. You can find a handful of songs elsewhere, but it's those two albums that are his mark and legacy

This is now venturing into personal taste, but I would take Blew and School over Territorial Pissings, too, and Serve the Servants, Frances Farmer, Very Ape, and maaayybe Scentless Apprentice.

I fear I'll lose the crowd here.

This is almost as insightful an observation as pointing out that Stupid Mop occupies the final track slot on Vitalogy

Ok not Scentless Apprentice.
