I'll honestly never understand this. There are several bands that have thoroughly let me down over the years and thank Christ I don't make a point of posting about them on whatever message board.

But that's just me. I'm a man of wealth and taste who looks like 8-).

actually sirens is supposed to be the pink floydy one and those chord changes sounded promising so let's all just wait in joyful hope and keep our doobies on standby

they may have pre-leaked those other three songs to get the crap out of the way so that the next single would sound that much better

kind of like having a weight on your baseball bat in the on-deck circle

So both singles were written by Mike?
I'm now fearing the worst.

This song is supposed to be a "Pink Floyd" esq "80's power ballad?" I'm confused.

like harmless and Juvey said, they (and many others) hated No Code and Binaural at first. i don't think people should be so harsh on these songs so early when they haven't even had time to digest them yet. if you're initial reaction is negative, i understand. but the instant passionate loathing is just uncalled for at this stage. and at some points it's felt around here like hating the new songs in the cool thing to do and everyone else is just a fanboi. which is not the case.

Also Given to Fly, Faithfull and Brain of J. Three of the best songs on Yield and three of the band's best songs period IMO.

For all that it's hard to read people's disappointment, Riot Act really was Pearl Jam's last great album. I agree.

I love Riot Act right in the face, and Riot Act loves me. I took so long to love Binaural, you might end up loving it too, you never know.

I guess I feel lucky to like both sides of Pearl Jam. The five songs we have from this album are a definite step up from Backspacer (imo), but are still designed in that catchy vein which doesn't have to be starkly original to be successful on its own terms. For me the last two albums didn't quite get there. I have no problem with generic and 'by the numbers' if that tried-and-tested recipe does what it's meant to do. How long will it do it for? I don't know, but if the shine wears off, I still have seven albums from this band that are as perfect as any band has ever got, in my opinion.

exactly

Mad Season was when Mike really learned how to write a song. Up until then he couldn't come up with more than a riff, and didn't try cause he was way out of his league amongst all the other great songwriters at the time (jeff, stone, ed in vs/vitalogy)

Then in Mad Season, Baker taught Mike alot about songwriting and they came up with almost all of the music for that record. After that record Mike got alot more confidence and came up with gems like Present Tense, GTF, Faithful, Brain of J etc

although having said that, i still think the best formula for a PJ song is for Stone and Jeff to come up with the music, with Mike adding his lead over it, and Ed providing lyrics and vocal melody only

Saying "at some points it's felt like hating the new songs was just the cool thing to do" is no different than saying "at some point it just seems like people are justifying the new songs out of fanboy lust."

Don't lose sight of the fact that these songs can't even be mentioned on the official Pearl Jam forum.
There's the dog. You can't fake that stuff. Confess with your mouth.
