I'm going fishing for two days later this week. I don't own a pole, borrowing one from my father-in-law.
Wish me luck. I'm also bringing a book.

On a recent trip to the river, I caught the fishing bug. I was equipped with my kid's buzz lightyear pole, some cheap spinner bait, and patience. Caught a sunfish and a bass with minimal effort. Now I want to stock up on gear and go down to the bayou near my house to fish every day. The trouble is, my wife didn't marry a fisherman. It's going to be hard to justify this new habit that keeps me away from home. Also, I don't have a clue how to start building a rig.

when we bought our lake place, i picked up some gear and fully intended to catch the bug, but i couldn't figure out the new age pole.

if you bring the kids, it becomes a break for the wife, and you can fish all you want

When I was a kid I was obsessed. As an adult I found my fishing rod can remain a whole year under the car seat without me touching it. It's just too boring.

Fishing is great. It's for folks who are happy to be alone with their thoughts. But I certainly don't enjoy it enough to do it in shitty weather.

The last great fishing trip I was on me and my buddy got wasted in our canoe and were accused of ditching the group and it was a major controversy for years. One friend didn't speak to me for years because he couldn't understand we were just drunk and lost in this bizarre river system maze. The guy was also straight edge and I feel he was unhappy we were drinking at all. While everyone else was conspiring about how we ditched me and my buddy had like 8 to 10 fish. Tragically I remember my friend killing one trying to get it off the hook cuz he was so plastered.

How long were you separated from the group? Seems like a weird thing to take a stand on. I've done the same thing on sea kayak, minus the fish. Sometimes the main group is governed by the least adventurous, which I cannot abide.

I want to say it was like an hour or two but the reality is I have no idea. We were definitely looking for them though and it was definitely cuz they were slow. Some people just have so many rules. I remember a guys wife once talking to me in private to tell me I was stealing her husband's best friend... I was like "I am not stopping anyone from being friends in any way. what?"
