Do you remember which bar in Dallas? I saw them in Dallas on the Bloodflowers tour, but in a big amphitheater... I don't remember a warm up gig, and it sure wasn't announced. Bob Smith was always a bit partial to Deep Ellum... was it Trees? Trees is the first place PJ played in Dallas... maybe 50 people were there, but it could hold around 500.

It was in Deep Ellum. I think it was actually called Deep Ellum Live. It may not have even been 500 people. I remember that people lined up for days, but I actually got VIP tix through a connection at The Dallas Morning News.

I saw Magnolia Electric Co. in 2004--it was their first tour as Magnolia Electric Co, I think, and it was the last night of the tour. It was at Cafe Paradiso in Champaign, IL, and there were probably 150-200 people there. Jason seemed bored out of his wits. They played about 7-8 songs, about 35 minutes despite being the headliners, and it was all (at the time) new songs except for a slowed down version of "I've Been Riding With the Ghost." I thought it was awful.

How could I forget, a Killdozer reunion show in 2008. It was glorious and the last show I ever caught at the old Knitting Factory.

most surprising would go to seeing Iggy and The Stooges a couple of years ago. I expected to see some tired old guys looking tired and sad, but they rocked.

Modest Mouse (1999, with Flake Music opening (before becoming The Shins))
--edging out another Modest Mouse show in Memphis on that tour. Played at some bar at the backend of an alley. The kickdrum blew out a song or two into the encore, so they just broke the whole set and cut the show short. Bar filtered out, but I hung around having a beer. Had a few more with Isaac. That dude is nuts. NUTS nuts.

Death and Dismemberment Tour (2002? Death Cab for Cutie and Dismemberment Plan toured together in tiny clubs)

The two Mudhoney shows I saw in 2006 hold a special place in my heart for this very reason.

pink floyd in 94 the metrodome. it was my first concert, period. a good way to start, and no doubt influenced my love of the live concert experience.

springsteen/r.e.m./bright eyes, with john fogerty and surprise appearance by neil young, vote for change 2004. i went just to see r.e.m. i came away thinking it was the best show i had ever seen, and would probably still say it is the best concert i've ever attended. neil was introduced during r.e.m.'s set and played on country feedback- for me, it can't get much better than that. the concert ended with five generations of musicians on stage. a show i will not ever forget until i get alzheimers.

jonsi on his 'go' tour. sigur ros shows have always been amazing, but jonsi's solo show topped even those. the perfect blend of music and visuals that really stirred emotions- one of those shows where you tear up because you are simply that moved by what is enveloping you in that moment. it's a great feeling.

This is me, except the year was 1993 and the band was Living Colour. They put on a helluva show.
