What is iTunes better than?

I almost definitely prefer using iTunes to stepping on a squishy dog turd with my bare foot. So it's better than that.

+
Has exactly the same outcome.
I appreciate that my loathing for iTunes is no doubt largely due to operator refusal to learn the various ins-and-outs of the program. My biggest issue though is that I am very much a folder-structure-driven guy and that at any point in time I like to know exactly where my digital files are located. I want to be able to simply browse to a folder that holds a particular album and select all songs and play them. This whole "iTunes is your music library" concept drives me nuts. I can't tell you how many frustrating conversations I've had with my Bro-in-Law who treats me as a default tech support guy over iTunes. One time he wanted to copy all his mp3s to a harddrive and I'm like "Where are your mp3s located?". He's "There in iTunes." As if that's a real answer. I'm "I know they are in iTunes, but where are the actual mp3 files?" and he can't get past "They're in iTunes for Christ's sake!".
Whatever, if it works for you all power to you. For me though it's the one program that I have withdrawn all my support for at home. This has made for some fun times watching the 3 ipod/pad/phone users in my house struggling with the spawn of satan thing that it is.

My itunes still keeps everything in an organized folder on my external hard drive. If I want to know where the files are for an album I click on Music folder it pulls from, find the artists' folder, and pull up the album. I don't doubt that there are other things that work as well as itunes, but I don't really see a glaring flaw to it either.

You can organize any collection of computer files into any structure of folders without using third party software. I have a FLAC folder, when I download an album it goes into that artists folder, in a sub folder labeled XXX - Album Name (where XXXX is year of releae).
I can drag and drop anything I want into a winamp playlist I kind of just use like a scratchpad.

Well yes, you can avoid any difficulty if you name the file adequately and place it in a folder using the same method to find it.
But the crux here seems to be the metadata attached to the media files; iTunes is bloated shit, any OS can organize files with adequate metadata attached without any unitasker programs and some of us just like to drag and drop raw, no frills.

Most music is heard in the car (iPhone + CD) or at work (youtube).

It's not. Plenty of free FLAC to be found on bandcamp + scene releases.

Bandcamp I didn't even think of but don't most scene releases hit what.cd first?

I stand by my comment that you can maintain a reasonable ratio by simply seeding everything, always.
I guess it helps if you download somewhat selectively as well...

We should move this discussion to the What/Waffles thread...but another thing that's important is tagging your uploads with as many tags as reasonably possible, since many users have scripts set up to automatically download new uploads. So that obscure band you found on Bandcamp, instead of just tagging them "indie," try "rock, 2010s, alternative, pop, indie.pop, singer.songwriter." Doesn't really matter if it's accurate, since most people with auto-download scripts won't listen anyways.

Me too. I have looked at some alternatives, but why bother? I guess I'm firmly planted in the Appleverse.

Oh so to the subject at hand...I still have loads of stuff I have barely scratched the surface with in my iTunes library. I ended up making a playlist called "3 plays or less", so it is filtered on equal to or less than 3. I have like 3000 tunes in that playlist so I go through that a lot.
When I feel like hearing new(ish) stuff (new to me, not like new this year), I go to Pandora and shuffle my various stations. If I hear a song I like, I may head over to Spotify and listen to the whole album, or sometimes I may get that particular song form iTunes.
