Jam Bands are pretty much all I listen to anymore with any regularity: Derek Trucks Band, Allman Brothers Band, Widespread Panic, Phish, Grateful Dead, Anders Osborne, Railroad Earth, etc

Seeing as how I'm a bit older than most of the RM residents, I was lucky enough to have seen a ton of Grateful Dead shows in the late 80's and early 90's. If anyone really thinks no jam bands can write decent lyrics I would tell them to check out Robert Hunter's lyrics through the years, particularly around the American Beauty and Workingman's Dead days. These are, IMO, some of the best lyrics of any American band of that era and for me they definitely stand the test of time.

As for other jam bands, I've seen quite a few Allman Brothers shows through the years, probably a couple of dozen in The Beacon Theater alone during the 90's. They're an American institution and an all around awesome blues band. I'll also listen to some WSP from time to time and am a huge Gov't Mule, Derek Trucks, and Railroad Earth fan. Each of these bands brings something different to the table whether it's Gov't Mule's straight out blues (they do some awesome covers too) or Derek's beautiful, unique slide playing.

You mentioned my favorite Dead albums. Big Mule and ABB guy but have yet to listen to Railroad Earth, even after attending my share of Mountain Jams... will have to check them out. Won't be making MJ for the first time in a while this year, plus I had to sell my Mule NYE-E tix in December... hopefully they make a summer/fall swing round these parts.

I compartmentalize Phish: studio, live jams, lyrics, shows. I can really only enjoy random jams that I catch and even those are few and far between... Trey's voice just ain't ever gonna be my bag.

That's funny because this year will be my first Mountain Jam. Great lineup this year and I can't wait. I'm not going to say I never hear any Phish that sounds good but on the whole they're just not my thing. Plus, a lot of my friends are huge Phish fans so I like to fuck with them

What's wrong with the jams fading into the background? Let em do so, especially if it's enjoyable; there's a type of music to fit any occasion.

I love the Allman Brothers and I like the Dead, and I don't hate on Gov't Mule or Phish or several others mentioned in this thread...I've no problem skipping 27 minute songs and just listening to the actual song before 12 minutes of jamming.

The people we gave our tickets to said it was awesome. My son caught a stomach bug so we couldn't go. I've been pumping him full of vitamins and washing his hands all day in preparation for Americanarama fest. Buying tix is a crapshoot with a toddler in daycare.
