I'm not saying it does. I'm saying the art direction is good. The visual coherence and strength of vision goes way beyond just throwing money at the screen. And it's more than just art direction - its artistic vision. It's a direct manifestation of the tone and motivation of the film.
It doesn't really accomplish what it sets out to do at all, really. Its a muddy mix of 60s camp, Burton's leftovers, and 90s darkness and neon. The result is hideous. I wouldn't call it lazy, but it is an abortion.
That's fair. But I'd argue it retains the best elements of each. It's an amalgamation of extremes. I totally get why it wouldn't subjectively appeal to someone, but I love the look and atmosphere.
