I think both Binaural and Riot Act are improved immensely live. Ed's vocals on the albums are too muffled/lifeless for my liking. That's not a problem live. My reason for cursing my luck would be that I have never attended a show in my life and if I ever get the chance, I wouldn't want them to be playing Riot Act, of all albums. An ideal setlist for me would be heavy on the first three records and the hits from the later albums. Then, they could play whatever else they want and I'll be happy. This hypothetical show probably never will happen for me, but we're allowed to dream. :)

I just really hate how they ruin insignificance when they do it live.

I think the only way Riot Act or Binaural are ever played in their entirety, in order, is at a true fan club only show. Average Joe's wouldn't want to hear all of either.

Stip would want nothing to do with this either.

I wouldn't want anything to do with this either, I really hope "which album will they play tonight???" doesn't become the new hysterical fan obsession.

I still like the idea of Encore 1 being album based. A select 6-7 tracks from any given album sounds great to me. Still leaves room for everything else and other album tracks can be played in either bracket.

No issue with that at all.

The Cure used to do this. Actually, for all I know, they probably still do. But I'm sure BiH definitely knows for sure whether or not they still do this.

:-)

Haha, I almost wrote "yes, the Cure used to do this" but thought better of it. They haven't done it much over the last few years but certainly during their 2000 tour they'd cycle through a mini-set from either Faith, Pornography or Disintegration in the encores.

Not quite as exciting but they tend towards matching pairs from the same album in the opening and closing song of the main set now, ie. if they open with Plainsong, they'll close with Disintegration; open with Open, they'll close with End; open with Shake Dog Shake, they'll close with Give Me It (which is amazing to see return to the live shows after a very long time away, but I've probably digressed enough now!)

Agreed. Leave the memories alone and enjoy the ride.

That being said I think like 1-2 times a tour it's fun to throw a curveball like this.

I want to be at the show where they open with all of Vitalogy in order. Then their encore is all of Binaural in order. :heartbeat:

A live show is such a different dynamic to the experience of listening to an album, though. One of the most enjoyable aspects of a live performance is seeing how a band or artist recontextualises their material for that environment, playing albums straight through seems to work against that. I think there's only very few instances where it's going to work, the spontaneity of the No Code performance in Moline being one of those, but I'd hate to see this become another absurd expectation Pearl Jam fans can foist upon the band's shoulders.

They did when I saw them last year! All KMKMKM first encore.

I think another part of the novelty of seeing a band play a full album straight through is witnessing songs that don't get performed that often. That's why it would feel redundant if they did Ten-- they already play half the album every night.

In terms of every single night, I agree. But it would be cool if they did every album once per tour. Maybe even once per leg depending on how many dates they do in a leg. I don't know. Maybe I've seen them too many times (way fewer than most here) but I think that's the kind of thing that would jazz the holy fuck out of me. I'd LOVE to be a show where they did that. Hell, I'd love to see every album performed live. I really would.

But, yeah, to expect that they do one album every single show is dumb and absurd.

Totally. But it would be cool to get Oceans and Master/Slave and even Deep or Garden, which I've never seen. Well, I've seen Garden, but not those others.

The answer is they do 2 night stands wherever they go.

Night 1 - Pearl Jam plays Ten
Night 2 - Pearl Jam doesn't play Ten (at all)

The crowds and the reception would be fascinating, especially for the band.
