I should probably move it up to #4. But those first three are pretty rooted. Everything after is flexible.

district 9 was a pretty wild fucking movie, if I made these kinds of lists it'd probably be in the top 10 just for the fucked up factor of the whole thing.

My movies lists are always useless because I'm such a terrible pussy.

I never end up seeing movies that are or could be upsetting unless A. someone tricks me into it (Dogville, Happiness), B. I stumble upon someone starting the movie and end up sticking around praying that things will turn around (Requiem for a Dream, Maria Full of Grace), or I C. totally fail to understand what it is I'm getting myself into like an idiot (Pan's Labyrinth, Mystic River).

Once I have seen these movies, I can never bring myself to think highly of them no matter how good they were, because jesus fucking christ. And quite often, I just never see them if I can avoid it (The Road, No Country for Old Men).

It's a problem, and an inconsistent one at that. On the one hand, even when it's over the top to the point of stupidity (see: Quentin Tarantino), it can sometimes bother me too much. I was done with Kill Bill as soon as they held up that filthy vasoline jar. Hands are up, I surrender, I'm out. On the other, plenty of movies that I would think would be a problem never bother me at all. So I don't know what the deal is. Maybe it's the mix of brutality and casual indifference that really does it. I dunno.

But some movies I think highly of from that time frame:

Lust, Caution
Good Night, and Good Luck
Everything is Illuminated
The Proposition
Up in the Air
Notes on a Scandal
Wall-E
Four Lions
Eternal Sunshine
There Will Be Blood
Shutter Island
Fantastic Mr. Fox
Frost/Nixon
The Fellowship of the Ring (as a standalone I prefer this to the sequels)
4 Months, 3 Weeks and 2 Days
Broken Flowers

I thought each of the movies I used as examples were good. That's why I referenced them.
