I don't like a well behaved audience at a rock show, but there are many shows I prefer to sit quietly.....I saw Mark Kozelek in Chicago for example. If someone had ruined the stare at my shoes and drink my beer vibe I had going by screaming or singing along I would have been pissed.

Can you just imagine what it would be like watching the premiere of Moonrise Kingdom in an audience full of undergrads who had downloaded an app that makes punching their phone's keypad sound like an Underwood?

What was Kozelek live like? Does he play with a band, or was it a true solo set?

EVERY concert you attend?

I'm not going to go ballistic and scream my lungs seeing an intimate performance by a quiet singer-songwriter or a string quartet, but there's something thrilling about the audience losing its shit at a rock concert or any high-energy show. I'd be pretty bummed to go to a rock show where the audience was flat and unresponsive. Thankfully that never really happens where I live.
I don't think an audience automatically becomes "flat and unresponsive" just because they're sitting down and not yelling idiotically through the music. But it's just personal preference--I can understand why people get off on the adrenaline of a rock show, I certainly did when I was a teenager. I've just had my fill of it. Concerts are expensive and disposable income isn't nearly what it used to be now that I have a family, so if I'm going to spring for and travel to one I want it to be an engaging musical experience, not an expensive frat party. I also just get tired of standing, being shoved into, and having no room to move. At most GA shows, I'm so uncomfortable physically by the time the band I came to see takes the stage that I'm just ready to leave.

Thankfully I've gotten pretty good at identifying beforehand the types of shows that are and are not going to be to my taste.

He was solo this time. Although I imagine he plays with backing musicians some too.

The room was really quiet and everyone was respectful of just soaking in the songs. Other than his guitar and voice you could hear a pin drop. All it would have taken was one drunk idiot yelling freebird to ruin it but thankfully it didnt happen that night.

That sounds like a near perfect night. Hopefully Jeff Mangum at Cullen Theatre on Monday will be the same.

Horrifying.

When I went to see The Sixth Sense, some dude loudly exclaimed "OH MY GOD" at the moment Bruce Willis was revealed as a ghost.

But that's about it.

I think it’s a little unfair to associate GA shows automatically with mosh pits. There’s a big gap between the “I don’t want there to be moshpits” and the “I want to sit down” feeling. I’m still nowhere near the second one, but I’ve kinda always had the first one.

Never seen it happen in Belgium either. But we're usually a very quiet audience.

That was one of my points: that I think Pearl Jam's audience has, for the most part, progressed beyond moshpits and crowd-surfing, so they're not necessarily fair assumptions to make in regards to GA shows. If anything, I think I'd take a GA show if there's a high abundance of irritating crowd behaviour - at least you can move to a more enjoyable position.

The other was that, if seats are provided, then it's mildly ridiculous to have a baseline assumption (which seems prevalent in the Pearl Jam fanbase) that everyone is expected to stand up. I've seen the band in both environments and, while I was one of those standing at the seated shows, I certainly wouldn't have done so unless I was absolutely certain I wasn't going to be inconveniencing anyone.

I am. In fact, I would bet most of the people on this board are the boring people at this point. I would never yell at someone to sit down, but I don't behave like I did when i was 20.

its a concert, not a movie

Unless its an intimate, acoustic type of performance (a la Benaroya), it would be really bizarre to be at PJ concert with everyone seated. Not sure I'd get the same rush.

we went to a Horse Feathers show a month or so ago and everyone was just sitting on the floor for the opener which seemed ok, but then when Horse Feathers came out they all just stayed sitting on the floor, ive never seen that before, i was kinda sitting on a bench around a post and would get up for their more upbeat songs and try to let my legs and ass wake up from sitting too long, and i would move around a bit with the music, but it just felt like i was doing wrong cuz everyone else was sitting on the floor. very weird, though the band was amazing
