I'd like to one day build a successful thread where you and I talk movies and tv together, LV. I think the different perspectives and posting styles would make for some good reading.

Woah. Yes, thank you for that share. A lot of RM in the archives I've missed over the years, for sure.

Problems with this show: overwritten, poorly written, poorly acted, tries soooo hard to be important, but it's basically incapable of nuance so it fails hard at that. Every other episode feels like a "very special episode".
Good things: still kinda occasionally charming a little bit

How is it trying to be important? Its a different take on a used up blueprint. I feel like it's supposed to feel a little different, but not 'important'.

Finished the first season. Overall, I really enjoyed it. By far the absolute best part of the series is Colin Salmon. Holy. Fucking. Shit.

Based only on S1, I'll say that I agree that it's biggest fault is in the writing. You're totally right that there tends to be a lack of nuance. Everything is right on the nose. It's not always a bad thing but it can be. But I don't think it's trying all that hard to be important. I think maybe it's trying to be topical. But it doesn't feel like it has much interest in being important. At least, not to me.

i got a question and follow up question for ya

do you feel you tend to agree with what the show is trying to say?

and if so, do you think that diminishes how you rate its "trying to being important" factor?

1. I guess, yes? I guess I'm not sure what you mean.

2. I have no idea how to answer that question. I'm not sure what you mean. My instinct is no. But I'm not sure.

I agree that they aren't trying to say anything especially challenging. But I don't think that makes it less valuable.

well my line of questioning is more about the idea of a show challenging someone. Like, if a person didn't agree with a stance a show takes, they may be more likely to cry out "they're trying to be too important" as opposed to someone who holds similar beliefs feeling the show is just tellin in like it is.

Ah. I see.

I tend to agree with Louis CK too. But, for example, the way he handles comedians' use of the word "faggot" in their sets in the first season of LOUIS is something I deeply agree with but also found it revelatory, inventive, affective, nuanced, challenging and important. Master of None's conversation about the female experience in today's world is also something I deeply agree with but I didn't find it all that challenging or nuanced. But I don't think it was meant to be. I think it was supposed to be simple and on the nose. Which adds to the absurdity of the fact that we still have to have that conversation as a society.

If that makes sense.

Season Two is off to a really strong start. I'm four episodes in and I already think it's stronger than S1.

I really like Aziz after watching his stand-up. He's got something genuine going for him that makes some of his more annoying jokes work, somehow. After watching him, I feel better about people in general.

i really enjoy this show. and enjoy Aziz.

what i find interesting about the show is that Aziz and I are roughly the same age (me older by a couple of years). i've been in a relationship with my wife for 10 years. i completely missed out on the dating app thing and trying to find someone in this modern world. i find it a fascinating view into how single mid-30yo men and women traverse through life in a way that i never did.

I totally agree. My wife and I comment on that aspect of the show a lot, actually. It's actually kind of relieving, I think, to have missed the whole dating app/dating in NYC thing. I don't know how I could possibly manage that shit.
