Does anyone know where "Happy When I'm Crying" falls into place between No Code and Yield? Since Yield came out a couple of months later (recording was certainly done by then I would think), and with the sampling of the song for "Push Me Pull Me," I always assumed this was some sort of Yield outtake, or at least a song recording during the Yield session specifically for the Christmas single.

edit: Nevermind, just found it on that Italian Recording Sessions guide. Yield-era. Same sessions that produced "Whale Song". Who was it that said this was PJ's time of retreating away from creativity?

I think HWIC would have definitely been included on Yield had it not been for the mission to fight to get it back again.

Whale Song may be the most underrated song in the catalog. It barely rates anywhere, yet it is very good.

As far as Yield flaws-

Brain of J - nope, no flaw there
Faithfull - nope, top shelf PJ
No Way - nope, one of their best studio tunes ever
GTF - nope, classic rock PJ at its finest
Wishlist - nope, great lyrics, atmospheric unlike anything prior
Pilate - nope,
DTE - nope, one of stone's top moments. overplayed maybe, but not a flaw to be seen
Red dot - well yeah, but cmon, doesn't count
MFC - OK - this is the low point, but really don't think it's flawed, Always thought it was fun and fine for what it is
Lowlight - nope, always been one of my favs
In Hiding - maybe lyrics bring it down a bit, maybe it's a little simple and structured, but i still love it
PMPM - 10 years ago, I would have said this was a major falw. But hearing it live changes everything. this one rocks
ATY - nope, forgotten gem
Hummus- another unique PJ experience, it is what it is and it is fine for that

Flaws, then ?

MFC - doesn't meet the high expectations that exist due to the rest of the album
In Hiding - lyrics/vocals, too simplistic

But these are stretches.

Vitalogy, No Code, Yield have always been tough for me to pick favorites from. They are what cemented my lifelong PJ fandom. Each one of them.

What would you guys take off yield in order to put happy when I'm crying on there? Or whale song?

In hiding and Pilate would get my vote.

None. They made absolutely the right choices on this record in terms of tracklisting. I like some of the b-sides from the era, but I don't see any way Leatherman or even Happy When I'm Crying improves upon what's already there.

The flaw for Yield is that it's all kinda nice. Enjoyable. Good. Well made.

But nothing FUCKING IMMENSE.

What I'm trying to say is that apart from Given to Fly, I look at that track list and nothing makes me go - Woah! You gotta hear this song!!

It's nice. Pleasant. Well done.

There's no "No Code" head-fuck-take-me-to-headphone-paradise moment. And certainly (Given to Fly aside) no "Anthems" that give me the chills like - well, most of the first four albums.

Yield is a weird album for me....there are moments where i feel its fucking awesome. Not only the music, but the band, single video theory, Monkey Wrench...

It should have rocked harder thats for sure. But its fucking good...and Brendan O Brien rules here.

Anthems? They're important? Imagine how totally boring and redundant pearl jam would have been by 96 or even earlier if every song was an anthem.

I think No Code, Yield and Binaural are pretty much flawless albums. A perfect trilogy. So...nope. No complaints from me.

Yep, definitely on board with pretty much everything said on this last page. Pearl Jam, for me, is basically Vs. through Riot Act. Ten is a Mookie Blaylock record, or the final Mother Love Bone Album with a replacement singer. The other three, I'm not quite sure how to consider those at this point. Those six albums, though? Man, I don't think there's anything near a major flaw in any of them.

I think samiad hits closest to my feelings on Yield, though. It's all very nice, and very good, but it does lack for strong highlights which all of the other albums have. Everything here is on an even keel, and pretty much on equal footing.
