You just uncovered an element of that record that I liked and never recognized.

For that reason, it's a pretty interesting Mike album. Next time you listen, focus on Mike. It's still a meh album, but that particular aspect is kinda cool.

I'm a complete idiot and actually searched for where the whole "patterns" thing came from (I remember something along those lines too). I couldn't find anything until I rewatched the Backspacer making-of promo and it turns out that Edward Vedder talks about Mike doing some of his best work playing "patterns" for the album.
