I totally understand one's disinterest in a band like Band of Horses. But I goddamn love them. They aren't a band I'll go to the mattresses for. I'll just sip my whiskey and quietly appreciate them while others hash it out.

Those first three records really move me.

Cease to Begin is a lovely little record.

Everything humans do is based on ego. Even complaining someone has an ego strokes the accusers ego allowing them to feel superior. Parsing bands motivations is so 1991.

Not saying I don't have an ego, or that artists shouldn't. Trying to say that great music either A) attempts to push boundaries or B) doesn't try to present itself as more important than it really is (like Kesha, Katy Perry, et al). Anything else is just noise to my ears.

I don't know. That's seems like an ironically narrow-minded view of what makes good art.

It's an unfortunately jaded opinion born from years of working with mediocre bands. I'm working on it.

One of the subtle but important shifts in how I consume and appreciate art over the last decade was ceasing to really care about an artists motivations behind why they do what they do. The story and motivations can provide an enlightening bit of context that can enhance an experience, but what matters is the way the audience (critical, public, and self) perceives and appreciates the result.

Love Cease To Begin and Everything All The Time. Both have been in heavy rotation here since 2007. Really weird discussion in this thread. Didn't really expect anything else though.

I'd put Infinite Arms above Everything All the Time. And, yes, I'm aware that I'm the only one who would.

But all three (including Cease) are great records. I listen to all three all the time, the rotation just depends on my mood. This new one will be a welcomed addition.
