Being shocked would be silly, but being upset would make sense. Blocking a SC nominee for as long as they'll have to would be unprecedented so liberals will have a legitimate grievance, even if the GOP actions makes sense in the context of today's political reality.
Burt's right though. The only hope Obama has in getting to fill this seat is if there would be enough public outrage at the prospect of the Supreme Court going one seat empty for a year. And let's be honest, most people in America don't even know who Antonin Scalia is when/if they see this news.
I mean I agree with that. Both sides are playing a political game. One side is "let's let the people decide" and the other is "stop being obstructionist!" The game requires liberals, in this case, to act like this is a shocking betrayal by the Senate when in reality they would do the same thing if the roles were reversed. So both sides are just playing out their roles in this stupid play.
And my hatred for politics comes rushing back.

Obama may pick someone who is moderately progressive on the big ticket racial issues and is a soft conservative on the economic/corporate power side of the spectrum. That could get enough votes from republicans to get through.
He won't pick someone too radical so as to avoid making any filibuster seem reasonable

My guess as to how this plays out:
--Obama nominates Sri Srinivasan, who he nominated to the DC Circuit and got confirmed 97-0.
--GOP Senate shoots down his nomination.
--Obama says a lot of strong words against GOP Senators about how irrational and nonsensical such an about-face was, but then just gives up.
--The Dem and GOP presidential nominees debate plenty about SCOTUS while everyone knows the winner gets to fill Scalia's seat.
--The vacancy is finally filled at this time next year.

Agreed. I think the right play would be to offer up a nominee who is perfectly qualified and basically a moderate, leans liberal especially socially, and help the party be able to yell about GOP obstructionism until November. He can't do anything to legitimize the opposition.

Why let this bother you? People almost never have a consistent position on process questions. Expecting them to be something they aren't is just gonna get you frustrated

I can't decide whose turnout this helps more.

In the end, I doubt it helps anyone. You want to talk about political things that frustrate you, this is easily one of the most important stakes of winning the presidency this year, and yet one that few people will actually give a shit about.

Probably both; the next president being able to fill multiple court seats is probably ephemeral to most voters, and they're about to get stories throughout the coming year about why it's so important. It foregrounds the issue in a way it hasn't been.
To be honest, provided Obama doesn't nominate flunkies, it's hard to see this helping Republicans. It's a foregone conclusion that they're going to stall/reject no matter what, but what is it going to look like if the Senate's potentially rejected numerous Supreme Court nominees by November? They're all the more easily painted as the same obstructionist party that caused the shutdown, sequestration, etc.

The right is a bit more sensitive about the court than the left, and so this is a great motivator for the faithful. This probably helps Cruz in the primary, too

It's the kind of movie you expect to be used as evidence in a court case at some point.

But it's two parties. Surely society can accommodate the total spectrum of political thought within two diametrically opposed parties, right? RIGHT?!

Since this thread started off macabre to begin with, here is the last action Scalia did as a SCOTUS justice:
Garcia is scheduled to die on Tuesday.

The political responses are so predictable, and would be completely backwards if a GOP president and Dem Senate were faced with replacing Ginsburg.

Hillary Clinton wrote:The Republicans in the Senate and on the campaign trail who are calling for Justice Scalia's seat to remain vacant dishonor our Constitution. The Senate has a constitutional responsibility here that it cannot abdicate for partisan political reasons.

So here's a scenario that's not likely to happen but would be hilarious if it did--and it shows that for the purposes of filling Scalia's seat, winning the Senate may be more important than the Presidency. That's the Republicans winning the White House and the Democrats winning the Senate. Remember that the new Congress arrives before the new president. That would mean there would be about a two-week window in January 2017 where Obama could quickly shove a nominee through a friendly Senate--and you have to think they'd gladly trash the filibuster for good to do so.
