But I've seen some live footage recently (around when Scott died) that gave me the impression those guys weren't as tight as I thought, and that there was maybe some studio trickery in making them sound so great. What's your guys' take on that? Are they actually kind of sloppy, or was that just towards the end when Scott was falling apart?

My fandom doesn't reach that far either, but I suspect your answer might lie in live clips from the Talk Show era. No Scott was probably a test of how tight those musicians were or weren't.

hmm, i'm not sure. I haven't watched many of their live clips.
His studio work is very impressive but i have not analyzed it. His rhythms did drive a lot of their songs

The 4 times i did see them live they were fantastic and tight to my ear but that was a long long time ago

Trag and me mentioned Steve. We talk about him all the time in the SY thread. He is one of the great ones.

Ah, sorry, missed it earlier in the midst of the videos. Yeah, he's really fantastic. His fills are out of this world with both style and timing. Love or hate the song, Kool Thing is a good example of why I love the guy. In some ways, Jack Irons isn't too far off from this style, especially in songs like Black Red Yellow.

I'm a feel drummer and the guys that I gravitate to aren't the best technically but they service the song and create feels.

Howard Wyeth - Desire by Bob Dylan. Phenomenal drumming. His stick work and accentuation to build and contain the songs if jaw dropping.
David Bryson - August and Everything After by Counting Crows. Great room sound and kit. Colours the songs perfectly.
Steven Adler - Appetite For Destruction by Guns n Roses. This album has energy. It is a sweaty beast and Adler drives every bar of this album.

One more under the radar guy I like is Mick Avory of the Kinks. He reminds me of a hybrid between Charlie Watts and Keith Moon. He's smoother than Moon, but not as smooth as Watts, and he's a little wilder on the fills than Watts, but not as wild as Moon.
