I love "Cold Confession" but just can't give it the nod over "Long Road," which is clearer of purpose and more deeply impacting as a result.

I used to feel similarly, friend. Something about how damaged I've become these last few months though has revealed how truly special and powerful Long Road is. I guess if nothing else good comes out of this Donald Trump fiasco, at least I appreciate Long Road more. *shrugs*
Hopefully the damage is temporary, friend.

I've wanted to ask, but didn't want to be traggish...But is this what's had you down? Trump as Pres, the sense of impending doom that I imagine has co-mingled with the NYC oxygen? I'm sorry to hear that, and I don't discount your feelings (or those of your friends and loved ones)...

But maybe find a way to step outside your sphere? I mentioned this elsewhere on RM, and can't remember if you responded or what, but it was really striking when my sis and her husband visited my over Xmas. Coming from the Boston area (and my sis being a theater person) they are in a very similar state of mind. I think it's important to find some sort of perspective to remind yourself that the sky isn't falling (at least not all at once). Find a way to be grounded and present this weekend; take solace in the power you do hold over your immediate surroundings.

So far. And we're taking all necessary steps to keep it that way.

Long Road has fallen considerably for me over the years. When it first came out, I was enamored with it, and loved it up through its opening at the Boston 3 acoustic set. But more recently, it's felt sort of plodding...

Cold Confession was a nice surprise when it leaked, but it hasn't held up as well as Let It Ride. It creates a nice atmosphere, but it doesn't ever really pay off.

I had a crappy version of Falling Down on cassette for years, until the fan club released finally gave me a cleaner version. But all we have is the one live performance. I can't help but think that a studio version with Jack on drums could be something really special, especially that chorus. But it's wishful thinking...

I'm going with Falling Down. If the lone live version can leave me pining for more, while the other two songs both overstay their running time, I'd say that's the sign of a good composition.
I would enjoy reading more of your thoughts on Falling Down and its impact on you. Because, see, I've never understood why anyone gives two shits about it. And I'd like to. I'd like to understand. Do we have a SotM thread for it? Maybe we could do a LAL or something.
Not much else to say, other than that there's nothing offensive about it for me. It's got a nice, simple verse riff, and a chorus that reminds me of I Got Shit in its sense of ragged emotional upheaval. It's not an amazing song, but I can't find a single fault with it. So my vote is purely on the suspicion that a studio version, with Jack on drums and maybe some nice atmosphere, could have really connected with me.
I see. I'm glad you dig it. Maybe one day it'll click with me. Thanks for the reply.

Falling Down felt like i found a a hidden treasure cove when i first heard it. I remember getting the REd Rocks bootleg shortly after the concert and fell in love with it immediately.

I've heard it a dozen times. Each and every time I think, "I forget how this song goes, or anything about it, actually, but people love it, I'm so excited to hear it and remember it." And then half way through I go do something else. I couldn't tell you anything about it other than it's also another song in a different McCready band.

the guitar interplay between stone and mike during the "outro" or "build up" is just fantastic. Its infectious.

That makes sense. I'll try to listen to that. But I'm gonna be honest with you... that kind of stuff never did much for me. I just don't hear it the way smarter people do. But I'm getting better. Listening to Tom Waits and St. Vincent has helped a lot.

She's so good. I can't even. Seeing her literally changed the way I listen to and try to understand music. She's amazing.
