At the 25 year mark, the Stones put out Steel Wheels, which is pretty comparable to Lightning Bolt. I don't think their biggest problem was that the Beatles weren't around to push them anymore.
Albums around the 25-years mark:

REM - Around the Sun
Bruce - Ghost of Tom Joad
U2 - How To Dismantle an Atom Bomb
Peppers - I'm With You
Sonic Youth - Rather Ripped
Uncle Neil - Sleeps With Angels
Dylan - Knocked Out Loaded
The Who (Townshend) - Iron Man
Stones - Steel Wheels

REM made 2 more great records after that one. Neil continues being Neil and also made some great records. Both Dylan and Bruce made maybe 2 good records past their 25+ mark, aswell as a whole lot a C- records. Sonic Youth made one more before disbanding. Both Peppers and U2 suck since their 20-yrs mark.

So...Neil must always be an inspiration to every musician. But PJ should also be inspired by artists like Nick Cave and Tom Waits, both continue to be excellent. Mostly, PJ should take a look at how REM changed things up after their 25-years mark. They changed their producer, recorded in Berlin, played lots of shows, did more press,.... It all added to more focus and better records for them.

I think we should also be careful of comparing bands to solo artists. In a lot of ways the later have an easier time since they aren't indebted to anything beyond their own individual artistic instincts and drives. A group dynamic is a very difficult thing to maintain.

It's also something difficult to manage. Going back in a studio 4 or even 5 years later with a bunch of guys you rarely see apart from a month or so here and there each year for a tour.

Yeah, that's true. However, you can still be inspired by a solo artist even as a band.

There are just not many bands outthere who made good records after 25 years. REM is one example that did. They should call Peter Buck and ask him how they did it ;)

Yeah that's crazy.

They made a lot of good points in the podcast, especially about the importance of MTV at the time.

Lots of points. As you mentioned MTV and its' prevalence. Vedder as a child star and being aware of his character.

Not up to that yet.

But the constant low level music track in the extended opener was doing my head in.

For sure, on both counts.

See, now this is the beginnings of a fair comparison of a band's trajectory. Please joostone, I beg that you post on RM every day. You are on point here (except for one thing I'll get to below). People are cliche when they just compare a band to their past. Compare them to peers at similar points in their careers (for the rare ones that survive the 2 decade mark). Also, as was said above, a solo artist is a WHOLE DIFFERENT thing. Not a fair or accurate comparison when showing Neil or Bruce. Apples and oranges. Add in Metallica, Green Day, and some others and take off the solo guys and you actually have a very fair discussion.

I think there are certain solo artists where a comparison makes some sense. There are plenty of solo artists who work with the same band, so it depends more on how that band interacts. Radiohead, Wilco, Sonic Youth and Spoon are some other examples of bands that have been able to put out strong work multiple decades into their careers, while bands like The National and The New Pornographers are other bands that I'm pretty sure are approaching the 20-year mark. I would never say it's not hard to keep making good work as the years stretch on, but I wouldn't say it's unheard of either.

We'd have to search the archives, but a good few years ago I believe I went on and on about this, to the annoyance of many (alot of sarcastic "meh why don't you create an algorhythm, or apply a formula w/ risk factors, or adjust for inflation, Maaah!" pile on Tuolumne moments).

So, I'd like to thank God, my family, and last but not least, me, Tuloumne.

Another band to add - Grateful Dead. And NO, no solo artists. Apples and oranges, people. Apples and oranges.

I enjoyed it until Pellington came on.

So is this going up once a week? Sounds like he's already recorded all of them so not sure he needs to drag it out that long.

It placed it well in a time in history. We often forget how Ten and PJ were placed at the time, how MTV was so utterly prevalent and how it was possible for a band like PJ to dominate the media.

I enjoyed it and probably enjoyed it more that they weren't obsessive fans. They acknowledged that PJ weren't the cool band. And they nicely hinted that Ed was a attention seeking fame whore who played the role perfectly.
