Thing is, though. I genuinely LIKE and ENJOY Lightning Bolt!
I do too.

You're one of the good ones, Mick.

Lightning Bolt is disappointing because it actually had the potential to be a pretty solid album. There are a number of songs that could have lived up to the high standard of earlier albums. Most of the songs just got killed by studio choices, mixing, guitar tone, etc. The framework is there for a **RETURN TO FORM**, but alas, it falls short or misses the target at an awfully high percentage. With a different producer in charge, LB could have been very good.

Backspacer has an all together different problem. It has bad songs. A lot of them. For me, there are two songs that I rate as four stars, probably two others I'd give three stars, and the rest is absolute junk. Just a bunch of boring, bad songs that I have no desire to ever hear again. There is little or nothing that could have happened in the studio (aside from writing completely different songs) that would change how I feel about Backspacer.

There is stuff I like about Backspacer. But overall, I'd tend to lean more toward your way of thinking. Obviously, I'm willing to give it more points than you but your sentiment is something I can get behind.

LB does suffer from production problems but none of those issues are deal breakers for me. It's still Pearl Jam's second worst album but I spin it often and always enjoy the experience. It's rare that I don't listen to every track (except Swallowed Whole, which I skip about half the time I play the album). It has some major highs, though.
