Speaking of retiring songs, I know it never will be but Given to Fly should be retired, because the HoF performance on live TV was really really really embarrassing <_<

I just watched this. He sounds fine, some of the scream-y parts could be better, but I don't know what you're listening to if you think that's "really really really embarrassing."

i don't think it was "embarrassing", he definitely struggled on a few of the high notes and it certainly doesn't soar like it used to but "embarrassing" is going a bit far. but yeah ive been saying they should retire given to fly for a couple of years now.

i think the main reason for his vocal tics these days is he struggles to hit the notes the way he used to so he needs some extra breath, that and the fact that he's more puffed out than he used to be due to age / ciggies / wine / beer / tequila.

Yeah this and the tics are really so he doesn't have to hold a note as long. Divides it up.

The extra consonants are absolutely a corrective device Eddie uses to keep from going off-key. When you think about it, the only phonetic sounds that are ever on- or off-key are vowel sounds. The more a song demands you change pitch within a single vowel sound ("nothing as it see-ems"), the more likely it is a singer will veer off-key -- it's similar to the difference between trying to draw a perfect right angle free-hand and trying to draw one using a T-square, with the tool providing an anchor to correct for human error. Drawing a perfect right angle free-hand is hard enough, but it's even harder when you have a familiar tremor and permanent muscle atrophy from years of overuse. Eddie adding consonants provides him additional pivot points as he struggles with loss of control. In fact, I think the "hurr durr" thing he used to do was a form of corrective control as well, in that case due to lack of development -- and in that he case, instead of adding consonants, he made it so that all extended vowel sounds contained a sort of ghost consonant on the bottom end (this is why so many parodies of Eddie just involve just making an extended "r" sound in a comically overwrought baritone).

Eddie's other major weakness is that he just has no sense of self-awareness in regards to the songs that are simply beyond him at this stage, so he just sings them anyway and sounds like a guy trying to sing a song that he doesn't have the chops for. No big mystery there.

nothing is "embarassing" anymore when you are incapable of shame!

tempo way too fast
ed's voice too crappy
+ being at an awards show

embarassing

Did you guys watch the bootleg versions or the HBO version where you could actually hear Eddie clearly? he sounded bad on all three songs besides the beginning of better man <_<

Here's better man, but given to fly was the worst.

His energy is great, the band sounds great, but man he sounds SO BAD!!! Like you could never tell he used to be a good singer besides the very beginning.

But the thing is hes not actually that OLD <_<. I mean the band is from 25 years ago but there are bands that have been playing a lot longer that sound much better. Its just kind of sad seeing him up to and having to explain to my parents that he really did used to sound good years ago lol.

Especially after THIS performance which was mindblowingly amazing:

GTF is phoned in the most. No band member seems to even enjoy playing it. I don't know why it is played so often.

Because Michael J. Fox goes to a lot of their concerts.
