For me it's Marker in the sand. The verses are so dirty and aggressive and then the chorus comes in with all the impact of a wet fart. It feels like two very different songs slapped together.
Same with Infallible to me. It's awesome then that chorus is like, what?
not a christina aguilera fan?

I finally figured out what the section at 4:55 reminds me of:
Leaving on a Jetplane
I keep wanting to sing, “So kiss me and smile for me” at that part.

Absolutely. Love the verses, the bridge (especially that last verse with the added percussion) but my God those choruses are weak.

"Much to be done", but sometimes it sounds like "More should be done"
That's the best part of the song, they should have cut out the first 90 seconds

nooo the verses are the best part
I think he sings "more to be done" the first time through?

Two listens and I think this could be my favourite. It's starts a little plain but once it gets going it really does in unexpected ways. The verses sound like Springsteen and the chorus is like a soaring REM.

This happened to me, too. Took me a couple days to figure out where my brain was trying to take it.

Thank you thank you it was driving me nuts. I also here part of Til Tuesday's voices carry in a different part of the song

It kinda just ... loses steam at the end. Unfortunately. Had potential to be AMAZING.
The first couple minutes are just awesome. Love love love.

Man, it just is. That whole album is a snooze fest, but I hate that song like most people here hate Amongst the Waves.
that and lightning bolt are really the only 2 songs that have any staying power from those albums, especially live.
Lighting Bolt is a pretty good live song. It was completely neutered on the album.
imagine if josh worked on l. bolt instead of bob..
coulda been an all timer

Eh, I don't know. The songs still suck, they'd just suck with atmosphere

There are a few songs (4-5) I like a little better than this one, tho I do love it.
But these are probably my favorite chunk of lyrics on the album:
"Freedom is as freedom does and freedom is a verb
They giveth and they taketh
And you fight to keep that what you’ve earned
We saw the destination
Got so close before it turned
Swim sideways from this undertow
And do not be deterred"

Why does Ed say hands twice in the "all hands on deck" line? Is it just because he thinks it fit the meter better that way. I think it would have been fine with one hands.

i don't know but i like it just like i like all the other imperfections in this song and on this album.
at first, i just liked the verses of this song. now i like the chorus, the big finish and everything in between. it takes you on a journey. some might say an all encompassing trip.
