Was PJ the kiss of death? No no, it's the children that are wrong.
I think I mentioned this in my review of the Sydney show - it seemed everyone over the age of about 30 was there because of Pearl Jam.
So PJ actually saved the BDO from much more embarrassment and financial ruin by bringing in 5-10k (conservatively) themselves.
I think they'll at least give the BDO a rest next year, and come back (if at all) in 2016. This isn't the 90's - the festival market is completely saturated here now...

It seemed the same in Auckland - appeared most people (over 30 at least) were there just for Pearl Jam

I did think the same thing as Sarge when I read that. And then I thought 'well at least it's partially arcade fire's fault'
I wonder what the problem was

I'd love to know how many refunds were given after Blur pulled out.

seriously though, what fucks up something like this? Did people not know about it? Too expensive? The bands not a sufficient draw?

No, yes and yes.

This is one of those travelling fests, right? Didn't know we still had those. I guess Van's Warped tour...
The massive flood of fests in the US seems to be holding up so far.

1)
Too expensive (pushing $200, I get that there's some value to seeing so many bands in one day, but really if I only want to see one band - it's not worth it).
2)
Douchebag crowds. OK, so I don't want to paint everyone with the same brush here, but there is a much higher douchebag ratio at festivals compared to regular concerts. And, unfortunately in Australia, we are currently having a douchebag epidemic.
3)
No seating. I'm too old for this shit.

There's also the element of the BDO trying to be everything to everyone. The most successful festivals here these days cater to specific crowds (Soundwave: metal; Stereosonic: dance; Bluesfest etc)...

I've been to festivals that were cheaper, had seating, and had more bands I wanted to see. One great festival was Livid, and it was spread across two adjacent stadiums. I think they went bust though, go figure.
Edit: Just looked it up. Livid was cancelled in 2004 due to competition (in obtaining good acts) with BDO and Homebake. If BDO go bust, maybe it'll return? Probably not.

This is the main factor, in my opinion.

I wonder how the band feel about headlining a run of festivals only to play to smaller crowds than they did on their last headlining tour.

And that's total people through the gates, the actual audience for their set is probably significantly less than that number.

agreed. i also need easy access to restroom. i'm way past the point in my life where i plan to hold anything in when it's time to go. evenflow should be used to accompany a prostate medication when we are in our 70s to conjure memories of grand urinations past.
if the robots havent totally eradicated humanity yet
but they will come out strong for robo-BDO
robots love arcade fire. it resonates within their chestal cavities and makes them feel tingly.
ps wishlist is a great song for #2.

This was a factor in Auckland too - mainly just with the constant crowd surges. It was the first time Mrs Rangi ahd been near the front at something like that and she started freaking out a bit, then there was one guy who thought he was at a 90's PJ gig and started trying to mosh I assume which was basically just running into people (shoulder barging some) then switching direction into the next poor soul. I was so ready to take him down.

I can agree with this.

I'm old and contrary. The Perth BDO is in 2 days time, I am in Perth and I could go if I wanted to. But I have zero interest, just can't be bothered dealing with the crowds and all the rest of the crapola.
In my opinion, generally, people suck.
