I bought a used copy of "The Wall" last week (from what I can tell it's from 1979, maybe the third pressing or so) and even though the cover is a bit beat up, I cleaned the dust off the records and it sounds great! Been waiting to get this for a while.

The Wall is another "must have". There are certain basics that just need to be a good record collection. An above-average copy of Dark side and the Wall are essentials.

went to to the store to get the sound city record and walked away with that, dylan's 'modern times', mayfields 'curtis', and deodato 2. probably should stop going to the store and start saving up for rsd...

I'd add Wish You Were Here to that as well, and for my taste Meddle. Felt like a big hole in the collection til I snagged that one.
I got The Wall a few years ago and it's definitely an early pressing. I paid $30. I balked at first, but upon inspection the thing was dead mint and I figured if they reissued it and it sounded good it wouldn't sound better and would probably cost double.

For those buying the basics/classic albums, do you actually like them? I have zero interest in owning a record just because it's a classic.

Not much of a Floyd dude. I had Syd's solo records which were pretty cool. But I always thought Bowie's Low as essential for any collection.

I agree with this. The only reason to own such records is to appease guests.....or if you really like them.

I generally only buy stuff I like, but if I find a great deal on an all time great album I'll pick it up. Not a Stevie Wonder fan at all, but found a really good copy of Songs In the Key of Life with the 7" for $10, so I snagged it. Also grabbed Moondance on a whim and it's turned into one of my favorite albums.

I suppose I'm talking "must haves" if you're into rock/classic rock. However albums like Dark Side almost transcend genres and eras. A record that works start-to-finish, flows well (side a/b pacing), nice packaging, and above all else has been mixed/mastered well for vinyl. Off the top of my head, here are some of my must-haves:
Dark Side
The Wall
Ok Computer
NY Harvest
Pixies Doolittle
No Code
Vitalogy (original 1 disc version)
SP Siamese Dream

I'm in the market for a new receiver and have the opportunity to get a Yamaha CR-600 for about $150 bucks and is in perfect working condition, looks fantastic as well. Anyone here have any experience with them or recommend it?

So I found out last night that my automatic for the people has the off key instrumentals on nightswimming. The rest sounds really fucking good though. So where does one obtain a copy for a decent price that's not messed up

Got a nice, purple, used copy of J. Mascis' "Several Shades of Why" at the local record shop today. My record guy even put it through the fancy-schmancy cleaner for me. Also ordered a pretty cheap copy of Steven Wilson's "Grace for Drowning" from discogs.
If it weren't for Jason Molina's passing, I'd be pretty excited.

Has anyone ever ordered anything off of Soundstagedirect.com that's listed as "Bend in Cover"? If so, how bad is the damage, really?

not bad at all. i don't remember which record but they emailed me saying that all copies of a specific record had a "bend in cover" and if i wanted to wait for them to get the new sleeves or if they should send it and then send the none bend sleeve free of charge later. i opted of course for the latter and it took me at least a good minute to even find the bend.
