I'd really put those top 4 against (and ahead of) the best 4 songs on every other pearl jam album after the first 3.

I pulled this out as an experiment.

Not bad.

This album should have been so much better.

Why would avocados be distributed on the black market?

Despite all the avocado-bashing that we see, it is pretty cool to have an entire album of PJ material to discover for the first time. We know it's not their best album, but there are some very good songs on there. I'm envious of the OP as this will be a nice little xmas gift one day when you're looking for something special.

I can't relate with a proper full album release, but I do have one similar PJ release ... I've never watched Live at the Garden. I bought the DVD when it was released, but never found the interest/time to watch it. I've watched every other official DVD, and countless bootleg DVDs, but never Live at the Garden.

So which is a better discovery? Hearing Avocado for the first time, or watching LATG?

Haven't seen LATG in years. It's not even available to buy in our local tower, anymore.

No contest. LATG is amazing.

I must try find it. I enjoy all the extra footage on IIC but the live stuff not so much.
Seem to remember the extras on LATG being really cool.

I'm really surprised I'm writing this, but I'd have to give my vote to Avocado. Despite the production flaws, there are a few really good songs that I'm glad are part of the PJ canon. Parachutes, Marker, Army Reserve, Comatose, are all worth discovering IMO. But, knowing how awful the album sounds, I'd quickly find the best live versions of the songs for future listens.

I was at the LATG show. Out of the many times I've seen the band, this concert still remains the best one I've been to. But, for some reason it did not translate well onto the DVD. Its still pretty good, but there's a dullness to it. I haven't watched it in several years and really haven't had any desire to. I'll have to dust it off again sometime. The extras are pretty cool, if I'm remembering correctly.

But, warts and all, I think I'd still pick hearing Avocado for the first time.
