Marc Ribot interview. Tom Waits stuff starts around 1:10:10.
Key points:
- On Bone Machine, Tom was digging some field sound recordings, so at one point he recorded the band playing out in the driveway. Typical enough of what we've heard over the years about his approach to be sort of non-informative.
- "What (Tom) said to me that made a lot of sense was...I was playing something that was kind of similar to what I'd played before (during Rain Dogs). And he said, 'If people know what it is, they stop listening.'"
- Ribot had a little to do with arranging Hoist That Rag. He helped push the Latin rhythm facet of it. But not everybody in the band knew how to play in that style, so somewhere in the middle of the song the bass ends up "off" and gets turned around as a result.
- He didn't realize he was playing the solo on Hoist until halfway through. "Oh...I guess nothing else is happening." This is why it seems to loop around a single theme for the first half of the solo (to great effect, I might add). He thought he was doing a backing track thing.
Woyzcek sucked when I saw it. Some of Tom Waits more imaginative stuff doesn't always sound good coming from people who aren't him. I just hope he records it as an album.

Anyone have a guess as to why "I Hope That I Don't Fall in Love with You" is his most popular song on Spotify? It's a nice song and all, but...if you had given me fifty guesses I wouldn't have gotten to it.

Like the most popular song by anyone or just for Tom Waits? If it's just for Waits I understand it.
I don't Spotify.
