im with you though. I am eager for the EE

The EE of DOS added absolutely nothing of value..and thats the first time thats happened...hopefully there is more in this one...at least tie everything up...

The shot of Bilbo and Gandalf just sitting on the log at the end...that was pretty awesome

god i hope its at the end...
Spoiler: show
smaug gets dispatched with barely a mention...and then to the end, its a mess of unresolved loose ends

Went to see it last night.
dimejinky99 wrote:Ive just put on disc 2 of fellowship randomly and realised something we all know. The score in LOTR adds SO much to the whole thing. You're looking at amazing helicopter shots on mountainsides but that's not what comes in. It's the music, rousing and powerful, down to Gandalf at the walls of Moria, warning Frodo about the effect of the ring on the others, subtle and effective.
The score was hugely important in the LOTR films. And sadly none of the hobbit films have a score that conjures those feelings or helps imply what you are meant to be feeling, in anything like the same way. Real loss.
LoathedVermin72 wrote:Oh, and you're right about the score; I was REALLY longing for the emotional pull of the LOTR score during this.
I picked up on this during the movie last night too. The score was a constant barrage of "epic" but with no real memorable or defining moments. The only time I was even aware of the score was when it called back the LOTR score. Those were done infinitely better. You remembered that music when you left the theatre.

dimejinky99 wrote:Also, a warning to avoid the higher frame rate version. If you can find a cinema with just the regular frame rate showing, see that. People are falling asleep in the HFR theatres apparently
I CANNOT STRESS THIS ENOUGH. I've avoided this format in the past but I went with my old man last night and let him buy the tickets. Oops. From the opening frame of the movie I immediately knew that we'd made a HUGE mistake. If it was just my wife and I we would have walked out and asked for tickets to a regular showing but I didn't want to go through all that with Dad there. I don't know why they insist on this format because I was deeply aware of it for every second of the movie. At no point was I able to suspend disbelief and forget that I was watching a movie. Besides the whole soap opera effect which basically ruined every non-CG scene (which were few and far between), it called into stark contrast just how prevalent (and often terrible) the CGI was. Maybe it wasn't bad and the HFR just made it appear that way, or i'm so used to seeing CG on a format that hides some of it's flaws? Fight scenes looked goofy and they lacked physical weight, almost as if the characters were on a planet with a fraction of earth's gravity. It was truly awful. You eyes don't know where to focus because EVERYTHING on the screen is so sharp and defined. When you should be watching Smaug in the distance raining fire on Laketown, instead you are looking at the detail of the roof tiles in the foreground. You could easily tell which scenes were shot on a real set with practical effects because it looked so real (in a bad way ) while the CG scenes looked like a bad video game rendered with a really nice video card.

Still I think I enjoyed the movie and i'm planning to go see it again in regular old non-3d format. Or maybe i'll wait for the extended edition to be released. I really want to see this movie on it's own so I can judge it appropriately. I liked the first two and the CG doesn't look anywhere near as terrible on those two when viewed at home so i'm expecting this should be the same once it gets a dvd release.

I love how Jackson stages epic battles, so 45 minutes of this sounds just fine to me

I've apologised for the first two. But This movie is terrible. Shockingly so. He has staged epic battles well before, but he's phoning it in here.

The cg orcs are worse than ever, but the real problem is the story (there isn't one), and the dialogue is George Lucas worthy.

There was that one bit where...
Spoiler: show
"a hundred goblin mercenaries" jump over a ledge, and Thorin is like "no problem" or something to that affect, then him and another guy kill them all. WTF? Was that supposed to be a joke? Was it a wink at the audience as if to say "haha fuck you idiots. thanks for coming."
Summed up the entire movie to me. Utterly pointless, unearned, inauthentic garbage.

and "Is this what love is? take it from me! it hurts!" BWAAHAHAHAAHAHAH

Did Cumberbatch get paid for this? Easiest paycheck he ever got.

My probable enjoyment of this will likely be greatly enhanced by my utter disdain for the source material
