I need to hit the pool but there has always been something about swimming at the pool that has been .....unsettling. I mean, how effective is chlorine really anyway? Not to mention the band aids, hairballs, ect. that sometimes can be spotted in the gutter.

I'm starting to enjoy swimming and my trail run has this one bend at about the 55 minute mark that I refer to as the come shot of the run. You just finish a hill, you know there's only one hill and fifteen minutes left. You round this slow corner, the trees open up and you take in the lake surrounded by mountains. That corner, with my heart beating hard makes me so happy to be alive. I never get tired of it.
Kill it, brother!
I felt leg heavy from the get go but promised myself I would not walk any hill, no matter how bad I felt. Never hit a point of feeling good. Did this one on determination and cardio. Shocked when I got back to my car and saw I knocked a minute off of last week's time. Pretty fucking happy with that. I have to admit the way you talk of kicking your last mile helped. It inspired me to push my last mile hard. Thank you. Now beers, Bruins and a punk show.

Just don't swim in the gutters and you don't have to worry about the band-aids and hairballs.

14 miles in 1:55

Ended up skipping the trail run, instead opting for my brutal TV Towers run. This starts at the base of PHX's South Mountain then works its way up to an array of TV broadcast towers. It's a pretty nasty run that has left me walking twice. I knew the up would kill me, when in stellar shape I generally do the up in 59 or 60. I thought a 66 or 65 would be good and a 64 would be a best-case scenario. The road was flooded with cyclist as usual. I went out pretty conservative. The first couple of miles are rolling hills and I stuck with 8-minute miles in an effort to save my legs. I got pretty confident that I wasn't gonna bonk about halfway up and picked up the pace. I actually passed two runners. Both looked like they were near-death. I offered some attaboys, but they looked finished. At some point it became clear to me that I was gonna break 65 for the up and I decided to push it. Made it to the top in 63. Enjoyed the view for about 10 seconds, then off I went. Tried like hell not to hit the brakes and just roll with it on the down, but it's so hard to fight the body's desire to stop that downward momentum. Things were fine until I hit the rolling hills with about 2 miles left. My legs were pretty wasted. Then I realized I could still do a 1:55 with a 7:30 final mile. I just gritted my teeth and ran as fast as I could. Finished in 1:55. I ate 2 gels and drank 20 oz. of Gatorade along the way. Pretty damn happy about this run.

I ate 17 fish tacos as a reward.

Peeps, unless you're trying to play Div I football that's plenty strong enough. Just make sure your shoulders are proportionately as strong as your chest. Building your shoulders will make all your clothes hang better and you look better.

Unless you plan on being flat on your back holding up mountains and such, it's your shoulders that are going to be doing the work.

Three 9 mile runs in a row. Sunday got out at 8:15 am. Monday got out at 12:30pm and today I got out at 8:15am again. So I did 18 of those 27 miles in less than 24 hours.

Legs are sore and stiff. But otherwise I feel pretty good. Did all three runs under 90mins. Two of them at 80mins.

10 miles in 73 minutes

Quads were blasted by the downhill on Sunday's run. Thought for most of the day that I was just gonna take an extra day off, but when I got home I decided to go for it. I actually did a proper stretch for once, then hit the canals. I decided I was not gonna push for a 70-minute run and just enjoy myself. Pretty much stuck to that, but I'm not sure I would have been able to push it anyway as my quads hurt the entire way. 36 out. 37 back. Got hung up at 2 traffic crossings on the way back and my finishing kick was a joke. Not a great run, but I'm happy to put some miles on tired legs.

Yes, you need to pick it up so you'll be ready for the inaugural RM Grand Canyon Invitational Run this spring.

10 miles in 72 minutes

Despite an 11-hour day at work, I was ready to run when I got home. I hit the canals after downing a banana and some coffee. Unfortunately, I got hung up at every traffic crossing on the way out and didn't hit the turnaround until 37. My luck and timing was better on the way back and made it home in 72 minutes. My legs are getting stronger and my endurance is coming back. I'll be ready for something serious after I shed some of this extra weight.
