They're the poster boys of modern metal. There are always going to be "purists" denouncing the more accessible, well received artists within their genre of choice.

Of course, I could be missing the point entirely, but I don't see how any metal fan could flat out hate Mastodon's music.

Because it's boring? I don't know.

Whatchya listenin' to these days pal? I've downloaded a fuck-ton of 2014 releases in the past couple of weeks and i've been trying to work my way through them all. That Bastard Sapling record you recommended a while back turned out to be quite good. Also liking the new Bloodbath. The new Lord Mantis seems promising but i've only given it a cursory listen. The one that's really grabbed me the hardest is Generation of Vipers. I'd never really heard of them before but i've been playing their new one non-stop for the past few days. Don't know if it'd be your scene or not (sludgy hardcore), but it's definitely doing it for me.

And of course, who could forget that Cloudkicker put out a new EP last week? I don't know if he still counts as metal but i still really like pretty much everything Ben does.

I have no idea how Weedeater's vocalist hasn't lost his voice by now. Such a brutal singing style. It sounds like he's doing himself damage with every throaty line.

I'm not going to make a big deal out of whether they're "metal" or not (that's a silly argument to get into), but I'm definitely with Heathen on finding Mastodon boring. The whole "stoner pop" scene they lead, with the exception of a few songs by The Sword, doesn't do anything for me.

Also, in other news, High on Fire needs to get Steve Albini to record them again. None of their stuff outside of Blessed Black Wings is even close to how good that monster is, and a pretty big reason for that is the production.

I've been trying to catch up with all the new stuff I've downloaded but free time is rather scarce. New Yob and Panopticon were alright. There's some great stuff on Roads to the North but the bluegrass shtick can't help but feel out of place. New Primordial felt a bit disappointing, it's far from bad but I feel like they've made better versions of this album before. I've only heard it once though so who knows.

I kinda have to be in a real specific mood to listen to Yob. Sometimes i'm just floored by how awesome they are and other times it's just "meh". I've always been somewhat hit or miss on them so i haven't had much of a chance to take in the new one yet.

I've listened to that Panopticon a few times and I agree about the bluegrass bit. That one song just completely ruins the pace and atmosphere of the album. Otherwise i really like it.

Do any of you boners like Kylesa? If so, which album should I check out first?
