What's wrong with having strong opinions? Is it just because it happens to be a common opinion? Or is it just because this particular band haven't had a hit for a few years? I don't really understand.

I'm sure there are cases where strong dislike of Nickleback is entirely genuine, though I'd still question how big an impact the band has on anyone who doesn't actively seek them out in 2015, but what I'm talking about is the fact that it's become a meme in itself, seemingly disconnected from the band or their songs: a badge being displayed to signify that you're not one of those people.

They announced an Australian tour recently, or so I gather from the photo I saw on Facebook where someone had taken a photo of the tour poster to MAKE SURE EVERYBODY KNOWS HOW MUCH THEY DISLIKE THIS HORRIBLE BAND and many people also agreed that golly gosh they are terrible aren't they please ensure everybody knows that I feel this way and that they do not mistake me for one of those terrible people who like things like this.

Wait, does spenno like nickelback then?

I hardly think about Nickelback often, but as someone who is familiar enough with probably 10-12 of their major songs simply from osmosis, I understand where those people are coming from. The one song you heard that might have been by them was probably not one of their real whoppers.

This is quite true, I think this is squarely the province of grumpy 30-something music fans who feel their grip on popular culture is increasingly slipping from their grasp.

Imagine Dragons are hideous, but from what I've heard from them they've got a long way to go to catch Nickelback on the shit-o-meter.
