Honestly, all you need to know is (spoilers for Ragnarok)
Spoiler: show
- Due to convoluted reasons, Hulk ends up on another planet with Thor and Loki
- Thor, Loki and Hulk then go back to Asgard to defend it from a new threat, Hela (goddess of death, and also Thor and Loki's sister)
- Thor loses an eye during the battle
- At the end of that battle, Asgard explodes but Thor, Loki and the Asgardians leave on a giant ship and are now basically refugees floating through space
- In an after-credits scene, their giant ship comes upon Thanos's even gianter ship, and ominous music plays
That's it. You're caught up.

Some moments in this movie are completely ridiculous though
Spoiler: show
Gamora just happens to come upon the map to the soul stone, lol
Thor's weird hammer journey is completely pointless (even if Thor himself is a highlight)
As usual, some cringy Marvel humor undercuts some powerful moments

I haven't seen the movie, so you don't have to go into details but...
Spoiler: show
I'm assuming there are deaths in this thing. I don't need to know who dies but do the deaths feel consequential? Does it seem like they matter? Or is it all just going to be fixed/retconned/reversed in Part 4? Do the deaths have any weight at all?

Some absolutely feel consequential and may not be reversed.

There's definitely a "we'll gather the Dragon Balls and bring everybody back in the next chapter" feeling to most of them, but a couple feel real

There was one throwaway line that said

Hawkeye and AntMan took a deal after Civil War and are on house arrest. Lame

Why did Thor say that only half his people were dead? It looked like they must all be dead, including Valkyrie and the funny rock communist guy (even though we did not see them).

I'm hoping they were off on a secret mission together and maybe that's the 1 scenario that Dr Strange saw. I read some fan theories that hawkeye likely saw half or part of his family die, so may be back with a vengeance in the next.

The end credit scene for Infinity War is probably my only complaint. Only because it seems like Fury should have been sending that signal out to EVERYONE that has ever been in contact with with Earth/SHIELD. Not JUST Captain Marvel. The guys next to me were hottly debating if that was Captain Marvels sign or Nova Corps. Nova Corps would make more sense, a space age police force that already has known of Thanos. Just seems like in a disaster like this, a sigle should go out to more than just one person.
Spoiler: show
xandar would make no sense since thanos already destroyed it for the power stone
i really have to give the russos credit. that was one huge fucking juggling act they accomplished while telling a larger story. it didnt feel like anyone character got more screen time than others and i thought as a whole the transitions between the plotlines was seamless

thor definitely shined in this one, playing off of his serious i must avenge my people and his new found sense of humor wasnt as forced as i would have thought

the guardians side of the story was good and the sing along to rubberband man was on par with his (quills) love of motown

as thanos said, hes the only one who sees it that way and they really made him a sympathetic character who is doing what he believes to be the right thing for the greater whole, no matter the how he does it

yeah i really liked what Brolin did with Thanos. Its the best character of the movie.

I agree that the screen time from every hero is well balanced.
Spoiler: show
I havent realized that the ones left are the original avengers. And those who wont come back after part 4

I want to say this, the cgi/sfx is amazing.
Spoiler: show
aside from the Spider-Man part in space
The seamless ness and the actors acting towards it is by far top notch

At the very least, it was the first Avengers movie to not look like a bad TV show, even if it sometimes felt like one at points.

I thought I saw the nova sign too combined with capt marvel.. I'd imagine that strange has some sorts of master plan giving Thanos the gem.. being he saw the only scenario that they win.. I thought it was dumb to turn spidey n panther to dust for the sake of suspense, being we know their sequels are in the works

Also, as far as CGI faces of big alien baddies, the difference in quality between Thanos and Steppenwolf is insane.
