tragabigzanda wrote:Just saw this thread. Not gonna read the whole thing, but I am shocked at the love in the first couple pages for The Nerdist. Chris Hardwick is a fucking CHOAD. He rambles ON and ON before getting to some sort of vaguely stated question; he seems really impressed with his own marginal success; and he doesn't know how to properly mic an interview -- some of the worst audio quality I've heard on a big name podcast. I would easily put him towards the top of my list of Most Annoying Famous People (below Rosie O'Donnell, but above Kanye West). I'll only listen if the guest is a must-hear.
(...)
And I'm not done shitting on Hardwick. Here's how he would typically pose a question to, let's say, Robert DeNiro:
Hardwick: "When you were making Taxi Driver...did you ever...like...was there ever a moment when...Because I know sometimes when I'm at work on the Talking Dead, I'll stop and think...like...What is the best way to...I guess what I'm trying to ask is...How do you tap into a story that was so different from your own experience?
DeNiro: "Eh, you know, I read a lot of Nietzsche."
Hardwick: "See, that's funny you say that, because I know like...when I am trying to think of guests for this show...like...one time Jenny McCarthy said something to me really funny...And a lot of people don't appreciate how smart she really is...But like, it's always been my experience..."
There are WAY better interviewers out there, and I am flabbergasted as to how he even has a fan base.
(Catching up on this thread)
This is a hilarious post. I agree almost completely. Haven't been able to listen to Nerdist for a couple years unless the episode gets hype or the guest is someone I'm really interested in. I still like Ray and Mira but Hardwick's aw-shucks humblebrag persona has grown past mildly grating and right up to completely repellent.
I don't listen to many podcasts these days. My Brother My Brother and Me is still good for a chuckle, Judge John Hodgman, the occasional Radiolab episode, Everything and the Kitchen Sink for music. Song Exploder is also cool but I wish it went deeper. I tried a few episodes of the Bret Easton Ellis podcast on LV's recommendation but although the conversation was interesting I can't get over how much I personally dislike that guy. That's BEE, not LV.

not sure why serial is sacrificing the listener's ability to pay attention by switching to every other week. I get that they have new information, but if they are adding just one episode, they have plenty of time to do so.

Been listening to Norm McDonald.
Yeah, Norm's Podcast is the best.
I didn't even know he had one. I'll look it up.
technically it's a webcast.
Does this mean there's video involved? If so, lame.
its just people talking, though.

I'm not sure much is really being sacrificed.

If you liked Serial Season 1 but are "meh" on Season 2, make sure that you're still subscribed on iTunes or whatever: this week (and, presumably, for as long as it's going on) Sarah is reporting from Baltimore every day as hearings are underway to decide if Adnan gets a new trial. Interesting stuff, but I wish there were recordings from the courtroom, too (there very well may be, but I think they are rushing it out so there's a new report every day).

How great was it to hear the Season One intro again?!

If any of you Serial listeners also listen to Undisclosed... I recommend listening to their respective episodes covering Adnan's trial back to back. It's fascinating to hear their takes on what's happening in the hearing. Sarah's obviously a big reason why this is happening and she's a reporter. She's made it clear that she's ambivalent about Adnan's guilt.
Meanwhile, the Undisclosed team is much more biased toward Adnan. Susan and Colin are lawyers. It's so cool to hear them each talk about what they are seeing/hearing and how they filter it through their own expertise.

Not sure anything has ever upset me as much as the most recent episode of TAL. Perhaps life-changing.

I haven't listened (in fact, haven't listened to TAL in months), but I read the article that goes along with it, and it was fucking horrifying.

The worst thing about it wasn't even the incompetence and cruelty of the local law enforcement. That!s almost to be expected. The worst part is the disloyalty of the people who supposedly love her. It's almost an indictment of the foster care system. These foster parents did not actually love this girl. Their first loyalty is to the system, which is why they go the cops at the very beginning of the investigation. It's more important to them that the police don't waste their time. Disgusting. I would try not to be so hard on the foster parent is there was any remorse after it had all worked out. But no, she still feels like the girl should have acted more like the way rape victims on TV act, so that people wouldn't think she was lying.
Just listened to this. The worst part for me, by far, was the end, when her friend - after everything! - still ultimately blamed her for what happened. Infuriating.
