If this show would slow down just a little bit, cease scoring every second of footage, and stop with the melodrama (ah yes, a sword fight where the two characters stop and stare at each other 87 times), it could be pretty damn good. Vickers is keeping this whole thing afloat.

the whole series is doing everything half assed when it comes to the three storylines. Theyd each need much more time to develop properly. These should have been 12 or 13 episode seasons. The numenor storyline in particular needs a lot more explaining and filling out.

Amazon's dirty, little secret is that they're actually cheap. The "$1 billion" gets headlines but most of that's likely going into the CGI and PR. Look no further than the lack of scope and scale when it comes to showing non-CG humans onscreen and zero camera movement.

Regardless, this is worth watching for Vickers, and I'll continue to do so. Everything with Sauron is a delight. I hope this continues to do well enough not just for more seasons but also breaking the Silmarillion legal logjam and getting another series set in the First Age with Morgoth.

those two points are tied together it seems. The tolkien estate were super strict and tight about what could and couldnt be featured in the series. Hene all the madey uppy nonsense to fill in..

Tolkien estate also locked them in for a full five seasons, nothing less. So ignore all the clickbait articles about it being cancelled etc.

But they will never ever sell anything else in or around the Silmarillion for filming. Especially not after this.

Anyway, here's Ace Ventura in Middle Earth:

Wow. Masterpiece. "Die, devil bird!"

Amazon on LOTR:

“All systems are go on that show, it looks absolutely incredible... We know our global audience is hungry for elevated fantasy and shows based on beloved IP; we see that with Wheel of Time, and Lord of the Rings will be the centerpiece of our year

As always with a beloved IP, you could get some criticism about not staying exactly true to people’s vision of what the series should look like as it comes to life, we are in touch with the core fans of the novels and we know the majority of them are really excited and happy,

You should expect more of the high quality addictive storytelling that stays true to the original IP but also brings new original ideas and storylines,”

- Jennifer Salke, president of Amazon Studios
For personal reasons, I absolutely loathe Amazon as an entity so I'm biased in this. But I absolutely hate it when people on the executive side of movie making throw around IP like in the above. "A beloved IP" is about the stupidest combination of words I can imagine. It's such a mechanistic view of art. In fact, I would argue that it's the kind of thinking Tolkein would ascribe to Mordor. So in that sense it's a little bit funny. It's the kind of thinking that will someday give you AI-powered and fully-functioning anatomical sex robots because people (usually young men) are hungry for elevated fantasy based on the idea of being beloved.
