Yes. I don't agree. The more audience singing, the more legit and listenable Betterman is.

I'm not going to ruin your project or anything, but I've always felt like this. The times when I end up showing Pearl Jam to someone new, I put on Betterman with a really vocal audience first, or Present Tense above.

I love a bit of crowd participation myself (my 'Preternatural Other Plane' Aus 2006 compilation has a great Present Tense like the above), but I think for a 'definitive version' a bit of audible crowd sing-along is okay, but not a whole verse/chorus.

Thanks for keeping the discussion going guys. I'm pretty much decided on most tracks now, but still not sure of Off He Goes:

Benaroya 2003 or East Troy 2000 (or another 2000 version? There are a lot of good ones).

I've ruled out the LO2L version because I find Matt's drumming a bit too 'stiff' which doesn't fit the feel of the song. The 2000 versions are a lot looser :nice:
darth_vedder wrote:East Troy is really good, just listened to it, but I think the LO2L is still better.

For those that haven't heard East Troy, you can listen here around the 54 minute mark:

Just listened to the Vitalogy selections - great stuff.

It really struck me how aggressive the first half of the album sounds live compared to the studio recordings.

And, damn that Immortality from Toronto 2000 is impressive.

This is a great later-day Present Tense. Probably my favorite version.

PT from St. Louis 2003 is tops. I love the roll on the ride cymbal MC does before the band really kicks in.

It has been almost 13 years since the Green Habit Compilation was put together by the
Red Mosquito Forum community. As the band has now been together for double that length
of time, an update or sequel to this collection was well overdue. Hundreds of official
bootlegs later (including numerous 'vault' releases from the pre-bootleg era), every
song has been put up for review.

Red Mosquito forum users were invited to nominate and debate their favourite versions
of each song, for me to then go away and listen to each to make a final decision:
http://forums.theskyiscrape.com/viewtop ... =15&t=8556

There were a number of criteria for picking a definitive live version: sound quality,
correct lyrics, no guitar flubs, full band (if that is how the song was recorded in
the studio), electric rather than acoustic (again, if that is how the song was recorded),
and original era/drummer where possible (unless later versions had something really
special). Basically, if you had to represent the essence and power of each song through
one single live version - which would it be?

After a LOT of deliberation, this is what we came up with. Thank you to everyone for
your suggestions and for the discussion to date. This will be a constantly evolving
collection, so will be reviewed as new shows are played or released from the vault.
The best known source for each track has been used, and remastered by JWB only where
required to provide the smoothest possible listening experience.

The Melb 1998 version of Wishlist has a number of lyric changes (e.g. ref to Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan), but the DC 1998-09-19 version is quite good

Definitely go with the LO2L version of DTE and the Melbourne Brain Of J.

I'll throw out a recommendation for the 8/25/98 version of No Way. I could see you not wanting to go with this because it's not a soundboard or official boot. But it still sounds pretty good, and I personally prefer the '98 arrangement over the way they played it in '09.

But if you insist on going with a No Way from an official boot, the Spectrum '09 version is good. Probably no better or worse than the versions you've listed though.
