Then why even talk about opinions on anything?
Why not? Stating an opinion is not an invitation to engage in an academic debate, especially about something as ridiculously subjective as art appreciation. I feel like it's very easy to gauge exactly who is looking for that kind of debate, based on the OP's demeanor. Especially because this isn't a debate forum. We're just shooting the shit. Not every opinion needs to be forcefully challenged.
I listened to a couple episodes of your podcast and it's clear that you have very different priorities than 99% of moviegoers. That's awesome, truly, the world needs more fresh perspectives. But I bristle at you acting like anybody needs to prove anything to you or go through great lengths to justify their opinion. That's just a bummer.

it's a touching and groundbreaking story of growing up as seen through the eyes of a japanese monster from the 60s named godzilla, who literally grows up on screen before our eyes.
very heart warming, truly
no serious discussion about the validity of a movie is going to bottom page my perfectly good joke about godzilla, dammit.

That's fair. It's just hard for me not to want to engage in debate/discussion when I see someone give an opinion that interests me, whether that's one I disagree with or not. I don't mean to suggest that people need to "prove" anything to me; I mostly just really want to understand where they're coming from, especially if I disagree as severely as with something like
Boyhood. People don't have to respond to me if they're not interested in engaging, but being who I am, I always feel an overwhelming urge to call out that opinion in an effort to create that engagement.
