Marathon Man. This was really fantastic. I was expecting it to be good but it exceeded those expectations. Really tense and some fantastic performances. I won't be forgetting the dental scene anytime soon.

Unfortunately, I have to go 'thumbs down' on Jennifer Lopez’s This Is Me... Now.
I watched the whole thing. It’s only an hour, but still. Not quite bonkers enough to make it a new stoner classic, but it is probably best viewed whilst high. It’s somewhat fun and interesting from the perspective of it being a train wreck product of unchecked narcissism. Self-indulgence on steroids. You know, she never once asked anyone in her group of “friends” how they were doing?
Obviously I knew there would be Jennifer Lopez music in it, but by the second song, the crushing realization of that really sunk in. Sometimes it was fun seeing how bad it could get. The least funny parts are when it’s trying to be funny, and the funniest parts are when it gets all dramatic. All bad. Yet fascinating. She's kind of a weird dancer.

I saw this for the first time a year or so back and also really enjoyed it. Did it make you want to start running?

The Holdovers is a gorgeous piece of filmmaking, the best kind of period piece, adopting the language of 70s filmmaking instead of just playing dress-up. It's moving and melancholic but also deeply angry underneath it all. Way exceeded my expectations

Is the Von Erich curse really CTE?

Might be that Hemingway disease.

thought Anatomy of a Fall was middlebrow tripe. American Fiction's ideas about race & some kind of stable, coherent self are interesting, but as a movie, it wasn't as strong. still very good.

spot-on, both counts. I read the book American Fiction is based on many years ago and I remember it being a bit weirder in a way the movie didn't seem to try to pursue

Personally, I think middlebrow is the best brow to be in. Better than high or low.

My favorite movie podcast released a Wild Bunch episode today, so I'll be rewatching that tonight.

«Middlebrow music, literature, art, and films are of good quality, interesting, and often popular, but can be understood quite easily.»
«of music, literature, art, or film) of good quality, interesting, and often popular, but not needing very much thought to understand»
«A middlebrow might enjoy both lowbrow and highbrow entertainment, such as the rodeo or the opera. Or they might enjoy things that fall smack in the middle as far as sophistication goes. If you like art that's about halfway between classy and trashy, you might be a middlebrow.»
Often Derogatory
«demanding, involving, or having only a moderate degree of intellectual application.»

For A Few Dollars More. Every time I watch this I think I might like it more than The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly.

Made it about halfway thru Game Night, when:
"We can't go to the cops, the Bulgarian has a ton of moles!"
"On his face?!"
"No! In the police department!"
And... I've seen enough.

It’s great, a true classic.
