I get frustrated when I watch co-ed softball players do that, let alone major league ball players. It's such a simple concept!

Definitely. Although Gordon has limited wheels, it would've taken a pretty good throw to get him. Crawford was pretty deep with the relay. But, no one wants to be the last out of the losing team in a WS.

Yeah, I never understood that...when you run, you're fast, the purpose of sliding is to slow down and stop quickly.

Plus all the injury opportunities from it... That's why come clubs have banned it in the minors.

they way bumgarner was throwing they were better to take the chance sending him home. they had better odds with sending him than getting 2 hits off of him in a row.

I would be really interested in knowing what kind of timing difference it makes, positive or negative. Like you said, the purpose of the slide is to come to a stop quickly to avoid overrunning the base, but it's also usually done to avoid the tag/make it harder for the fielder to get a clean tag down. Those things almost never come in to play at first base.

I'm not sure on the stats, but if you think about it. you're going at a constant speed (perhaps slightly slowing) while running. Once you start diving, your legs are no longer pumping to keep you at that speed, but your leap does give you a bit of an acceleration boost. It's why they give you the option to run through the base so you can get there quicker.

I think the video is flawed, though, since he's not running 90 feet and they never time the entire run - just the run up to it picking an arbitrary final 10 feet.

I guess if you wait to dive until the very end you'll get there slightly quicker, but that leaves an ever greater chance of injury if you're exploding into the base.
