High art or low art be damned.
Games are creative from the Uncharteds of the world down to the movie tie in games. It's just interactive art.

Re: The all inclusive video game thread
I think it goes beyond games that are essentially interactive movies like Last of Us. Is Tetris art? Minecraft? Civilisation?
Probably.

Team LV on this one. Games are definitely art. Furthermore, I think they've become a pretty interesting ideological and philosophical battleground.

Same. It's a once in a decade type of game like Zelda on the N64. The Last of Us is one the best games I've every played.

I would've assumed that you could differentiate between "I don't like it" not necessarily meaning something is "bad art" and yet here we areLoathedVermin72 wrote:gross

Re: The all inclusive video game thread
this is about to devolve into a "well that's just like your opinion" conversation and I refuse to go down that path again. "It's bad" has a whole different connotation than just saying "I don't like it" especially when talking about a game that a lot of people really enjoy. Personally, Last of Us isn't for me, but I'd never call it bad art.LoathedVermin72 wrote:The only reason I would dislike something is because it is badMecca wrote:I would've assumed that you could differentiate between "I don't like it" not necessarily meaning something is "bad art" and yet here we areLoathedVermin72 wrote:gross

I fundamentally disagree. I know I and others have been over this a hundred times already. This essentially boils down to objectivity (not real) versus subjectivity. Whether or not other people enjoy something has no bearing on whether it's any good.Mecca wrote:this is about to devolve into a "well that's just like your opinion" conversation and I refuse to go down that path again. Re: The all inclusive video game thread
"I don't like bad things. I don't like this, therefore it is bad" is kind of an insular way to view anything up to and including art. Its like you're refusing to accept another perspective to just label this game bad art. I don't care if you like the game or not, I just don't understand how you jump to "bad" as opposed to "not for me." It's not like it's some shitty movie tie in transformers gameLoathedVermin72 wrote:I fundamentally disagree. I know I and others have been over this a hundred times already. Re: The all inclusive video game thread
It's not "it's bad because I don't like it," it's "it's bad because of this, that, and this, and therefore I don't like it." You are still approaching this as if there can be some kind of objective "good" removed from one's subjective reactions, which is a fallacy.Mecca wrote:"I don't like bad things. Re: The all inclusive video game thread
Nonsense. Architecture can totally be judged on its objectives -- Does it allow for various activities to be conducted safely and efficiently within the building? Does it conform to building and zoning codes? Does it allow for good natural light and a healthy sense of space when filled to capacity? The aesthetic qualities, like "Do I like the pitch of that roof," obviously can't be judged objectively.
