What are the police for? Producer B.A. Parker started wondering this back in June, as Black Lives Matter protests and calls to “defund the police” ramped up. The question led her to a wild story of a stabbing on a New York City subway train, and the realization that, according to the law, the police don’t always have to protect us. Producer Sarah Qari joins Parker to dig into the legal background, which takes her all the way up to the Supreme Court... and then all the way back down to on-duty officers themselves.

B.A. Parker: The man told Joe, "Listen, I was part of the grand jury and I've got to tell you something. When those police officers testified, one of them told us, while you were there, rolling around on the floor with Gelman--"

Joe: He said, "I started to come out, but I thought he had a gun, so I closed the door and stayed inside." After we heard that, we got furious. He goes, "The whole group of us we all looked at each other like, "Did he actually just admit to not coming out to do his job and leave the subway full of people with a spree killer?"" He said, "After that," he goes, "I had to tell you." I'm sitting here going, holy shit. They left a spree killer, a known spree killer, a spree killing fugitive on a subway with probably 20, 25 people.

Shocking surveillance footage has shown a Calgary cop slamming a handcuffed black woman face-first to the floor and breaking her nose in what a fellow officer has described as the 'worst use of force he has seen in 30 years'.

Calgary Police Constable Alex Dunn was charged with assault causing bodily harm over the violent incident that took place during the arrest of Dalia Kafi back in December 2017 in Calgary, in the western Canadian province of Alberta.

Dunn is currently standing trial for the alleged assault but has not been fired from the force and is currently working in an administrative role.

Video played at his trial Monday shows the police officer flipping Kafi to the ground in a 'judo-style throw' causing her face to bounce off the concrete and leaving her lying in a pool of blood.

And men fare far worse than women. Justice is just as sexist as it is racist.
