im not so sure about that. this film doesnt paint the rebellion in a particularly flattering lught. its just that the empire is worse

the sheer existence of the empire, the power of the images, that all depends on what has come before. edwards does a masterful job playing with someone else's iconography, not creating his own.

Yeah, I completely disagree. I think you're bringing your own baggage to the piece and not watching it for what it is.

what baggage? l had no beef with this movie going in, and I am on a Star Wars high. I didnt even read reviews prior to seeing it.

We all bring a history to the movie, since we are all so familiar and invested in the tale. The words Rebellion, Empire, etc. all trigger certain emotional responses based on that history. R1 exploited that history very effectively (as it should have) but would not have been nearly as effective without it. Edwards crafted a wonderful Vader sequence at the end, but he didnt create the character, and part of its power was seeing something you always fantasized seeing fully realized.


likewise the most powerful emotional stakes came from the rebellion and the empire as characters, rather than the thinly drawn (w one or two exceptions) characters taking us through the movie (each of whom were well acted but had about as much depth as some of the alien 2 space marines). and those characters, like vader, were captivating because pf what we brought with us, rather than what was created in the film.

Remember that the rebellion original to the movie was this muddy and compromised thing. Saw Gerrera is not the triumph of this film. it was when it turned into the self sacriificing resist against all odds struggle at the end (the rebellion we know and care about) that the movie finds its emotional heart.

I didn't mean any offense with the word "baggage." Your use of "history" is more accurate.

Seems like we value different things about Star Wars which leads us to different takes on what makes Rogue One successful. And there is certainly nothing wrong with that. I'm glad got liked the movie and I think we can both asher that Episode 8 can't get here fast enough.
