It purports to be an examination of what it feels to be a woman; how you are at once sexualized, infantilized, idealized and despised for it. How perceptions are projected onto you as if you are a sack of flesh or a tool for self actualization with no inner life. How you serve as an outlet for every male impulse both paternalistic and lustful, and ultimately turned into an object of scorn. I think it does all this in the most obvious and annoying ways possible

you COULD say (I'm not, I haven't seen it, but you COULD) that everything you've listed *is* obvious and annoying (especially to a man who has more than a modicum of respect for women), and yet, men still keep doing it

I think Frankenstein has always been a metaphor for how power "creates" a human being by its own design and according to its manipulative whims; that's a story as old as the hills, and yes there are very interesting ways to tell it and maybe this isn't one (again, I don't know), but if it manages to make the viewer deeply uncomfortable because they've "seen it all before", maybe it's done its job? maybe it's a successful retelling of Frankenstein, an age-old genre story replete with tropes that are familiar at this point?

I'm going to see it, but I don't want to pay over £10 for it so I'm waiting till it's cheaper to stream; that said, as a trans woman I'm really interested in the subject; I've often said that we are "sheep" (women) accidentally born inside the "wolves' den" (of toxic masculinity), so the idea of a mad scientist going to town on a plaything is a really powerful metaphor to me

yeah that's fair and makes sense; I'm a (relative) fan of Alex Garland's "Men" but I have a lot of understanding for the reasons so many women hated it; it's really in the "slather the message on with a sloppy trowel" school of film-making
