Whenever there's active promotion on the part of somebody else, whenever I see somebody all dolled up for a fancy photograph and someone's handing out flyers or whenever there's active promotion for something like that, as an imposition on my day, I hate all those people and I want them to fail. I have a visceral reaction to advertising and promotion. There's just something about salesmanship that grates on me on a very base level and I react very negatively towards it. I want those people to suffer and I want their enterprises to fail.

Very interesting. Loved the montage and the cast. Some very funny moments, specially everything that happens at the shooting of the film.

I liked Poor Things. Beautifully off-putting (Off-puttingly beautiful?)

One thing I was surprised by, given everything I had seen and heard, is that I enjoyed Mark Ruffalo in this. I found him funny. Delightfully pathetic and wonderfully unlikable. Emma Stone is fantastic. She gives a - dare I say - Oscar-worthy performance. And Christopher Abbott is such an underrated actor. I didn’t know he was in it and then he swoops in and goes balls out.

I also watched The Zone of Interest which was devastatingly well done. The fly on the wall naturalism, gorgeously shot, bright and sunny, combined with the knowledge and sounds(!) of the horror behind those walls, and the mundane conversations about it, all made an extremely effective combination.

All in all, a nice little Saturday!

For all the eye-rollingly predictable stuff in Poor Things, there was one plot decision that I was surprised by:

Using actor names because I don't remember the character names.

At various points throughout the movie they show us how Willem Dafoe's life is pain. His body doesn't work how it's supposed to. He needs machines to do simple bodily tasks that we all take for granted. He is in constant, excruciating agony, and they show this to us repeatedly.

Several times they also make a point to show us that Emma Stone has learned a lot of surgical skills from Willem Dafoe, to the point where she goes see surgical students and critiques their work as "inelegant."

By the end of the movie, Willem Dafoe is succumbing to his sickness, and the broken body he's been trapped in all his life is finally about to die. At this point in the film Emma Stone has also shot her husband (actually her mother's husband, and I think he accidentally shot himself, but whatever) and brought his dying body to Willem Dafoe's house. So you have two men dying at the same time: one young and healthy but comically villainous, and one old and broken but (comparatively) virtuous and kind.

I really thought at this point they were setting Emma Stone up to use her surgical skills to swap Dafoe's brain into her husband's body, finally giving him the gift of a functioning body and another shot at life. Instead, they brain-swapped him, but with a goat? That was a bit deflating

Yes I thought God would have insisted she do this with the husband or some other body. Like that was the end game of his experiments.

I saw that one on IMAX… those bookshelves were crisp and vibrant AF.

I wasn't feeling well today so I stayed home. I watched The Grudge - it was ok. Some cool visuals, but not really scary and nowhere near as good as The Ring, and Die Hard 3 - I haven't seen it since the 90s and it held up really well. Not as good as the original, but better than 2, which I also liked. The chemistry between Jackson and Willis was great and Irons was a very entertaining villain.

I'd like to, but they're not on any of the streaming services I pay for. Maybe I'll pay to watch Ringu. I haven't seen The Ring since a little after it released, but I remember it being great and everyone saying the original was better.
