I don't think TFA sucks, I just didn't like it all that much. "Meh" is a better word to describe it for me. R1 however was great.

Is Jimmy Smits' appearance the first real nod to the prequels in these new ones? That's a bummer. I guess they really do exist.

Technically, the clone wars were mentioned in ANH, so I don't think that counts.

Yeah, there were a few sideways nods but nothing as concrete as Jimmy Smits. Probably the biggest one is that Captain Phasma's suit is made from a Naboo ship. But I don't think that's explicitly stated in the film, just in the supplemental materials. So, beyond that, the specific reference to using humans instead of clones again is the biggest one.

Also, I guess in the theatrical cut we see a flag hanging outside Maz's place that has the same symbol on it as the symbol that's on Anakin's podracer. It has been removed from the Blue Ray release, apparently.

I've really enjoyed the conversations I've had with my wife about R1. It's so much fun to talk to someone who has an even more elementary knowledge of Star Wars than I. She's seen the original and prequel trilogy films once each. She can't remember if she saw A New Hope a second time or not. And she's seen The Force Awakens twice. Rogue One, once.

After we watched Rogue One, I was thinking about how different (yet still totally appropriate) the film felt. It was a Star Wars movie but still handled things in a fresh way. She didn't share that thought. Of course, she understood it was tonally darker but she talked about all the things that are identical to the other films. Ultimately, she liked The Force Awakens more, mostly because she was more drawn to those characters and appreciated the tone. She loved Rogue One, too. And thought that film had the best acting in the entire series, so far. And loved the very real sense of tension and realism he film provided. But it was tough for her to watch, especially the fight on Jedha and the crying child.

But, my point, is, I still can't tell which I liked more. Both are strong films that play into the strengths of two directors that I really love. Rogue One is so visually striking and visceral. But The Force Awakens is magical and blooming with energy and life. Rey, Kylo Ren, Poe, and Fin are gripping characters that I can't wait to learn more about. Jyn, Cassian, Bodhi, and Baze are all characters I'm sad I won't get to know better. Perhaps TFA is more re-watchable? I don't know. I've still only seen R1 once and I think I prefer it... but it's tough for me at this point.

I still haven't voted in the poll.

I'm a pretty big fan of the characters in TFA as well. And she's not wrong in that they are more well drawn and fleshed out than those in R1. I happen to like a little mystery and a few gaps, so I think I liked the R1 characters more than a lot of viewers did. But they are one of the more minor weaknesses of the film.

We went to a Holiday party last night and I spoke with some people closely associated with the production.

Ben Mendelsohn's role was initially much, much larger. Tarkin was barely in the original screenplay and there was no Princess Leia in Gary Whitta's original script.

Krennic was originally a Grand Admiral (hence the uniform) and he was Tarkin and even Vader's superior. As has been previously reported, Jyn & Cassian Andor survived the end of the film and Jyn's role was also much larger.

From my understanding, Mendolsohn and Felicity Jones were initially disappointed with their reduced roles (Whitaker had a larger role, too, but he was magnanimous about it). There wasn't any "bad blood", just disappointment. Mendolsohn thought this would be his "huge break" into American cinema but with a largely reduced role, that remains to be seen.

No Star Wars film has ever done that. They've usually avoided it. And rightly so.


They speak to their time in message. Sure. But they never use the language of filmmaking in their time to get across.

That's why Star Wars doesn't really date. Cos there's magic behind it.

First of all, I love the R1 characters and think they are far more compelling and developed than almost anyone in TFA, most of whom I can barely even recall.

But I do think those script changes, if true, are a shame (except for the ending deaths). It sounds like the Disney machine at work trying to cram in nostalgia pandering. Krennic would have been more interesting in his original form.
