It's really bad (at best, totally forgettable) - and yet almost everyone here seems to be going bananas for it.
Strange times.
that means there's something wrong with you, not us

Not trolling, I was looking forward to this album as much as anyone but for the rockier songs I hear have really repetitive riffs. It’s Eddie’s voice that adds any variance as the song goes on. That’s all.
I love Gigaton and think the songs have development in them, even something like Buckle Up. It’s weird because I thought josh Klinghoffer would add something there like he did on the Getaway which he didn’t get much credit for. There is stuff like The Dark and Brother, Long Way has grown on me too but I don’t think there is anything else here that I would be compelled to listen to.
I don’t know… I’m loving the Big Thief album for example so maybe just not in a rocky arena album vibe.

can people maybe just let other people feel differently without guessing they must have something wrong with them for it?

I mean if I listened to this album every day for 10 years, probably. But realistically it wouldn’t be that different from any artist I obsess over. Jungleland and Born to Run are amazing songs that always speak to me and while they may fall into a spectrum of how much I want to hear the song at any particular moment, they always stand out as great songs. I am not saying The Dark or Invincible are songs that are as timeless for me just yet, but that I anticipate they will always be songs I come back to and love. Other songs may not hit with the same enthusiasm after enough listens because while they pique my interest now, elements of the song or the song itself may just ultimately feel redundant. In the end, this album is so new this is probably just me guessing at what I will continue to like, but the songs I listed I think fall into the pattern of songs that tend to stick with me.
An album like Gigaton, which is also probably pretty straight forward, has just enough nuance to it that the songs all sort of jump around my continuum and the album often stays within my reach because I’ll hear something slightly different than the last time and feel a new connection with that same song. No Code and Binaural are albums for me where this happens all the time. I don’t see Earthling playing out in that way because these are not nooks and crannies songs, they are instant gratification, which has its own value to it - but at the same time those songs also either stay in the place they started or the pattern gets tired and it falls in your estimation (the greatest examples of this for me are Backspacer and Lightning Bolt which I thought were great when they came out but in further reflection stopped moving the needle and even slid back).

this album isn't "objectively" good or bad; art isn't "objectively" anything and enjoyment isn't science

let's remind ourselves that there are people who think PJ sucked since 93; some of them even have compelling arguments; who cares?

relax it was a joke lol. part of my excitement is i expected this thing to be boring, mellow, and terrible. it's anything but. it may cool after a while, but i'm not sure i'll ever think it's bad or forgettable.

yeah I mostly was, tbh I read "this piece of subjective art is objectively bad" and I'm like a bull to a red rag

I goddamn love it. Its bringing me immense joy right now. Thats all i care about. I dont care if it has lasting power or not. I dont care if i dont like it 6 months from now. I dont care if i overreacted.
Right now its bringing me all the joy in the world and the show was the best Ed Ved type show ive seen from him in over 15 years. Im over the moon about it right now and thats all i give a shit about.
If im a worse person and uncool for not being able to objectively look at art, then i dont give two shits. Kiss me.

i think the hype of the tour def helps in the excitement for the album. i'm jealous of everyone who got to see them.

I just listened to the album for the first time while taking a walk. Awesome !
I had no expectations after Long way came out. But in the context of the album, it sounds great (even greater live from what I've heard).
From the first seconds of the album, Ed really sound like he's having the time of his life. Made me go from " grumpy-thirty-something-watching-the-world-fall-apart " to happy kid.
Can't wait to listen to it again !

I think "Long Way" is the worst song on the album and I have no idea why it was the first single. if you wanted something in that vein, i think "The Dark" or "Fallout Today" would have been better choices.
Try
Brother The Cloud
Power of Right
Rose of Jericho
Invincible
I'll Be On My Way
The Dark
Fallout Today
Good and Evil
Picture
Mrs. Mills
The Haves
The Long Way
i'm not sure i've heard this enough, but this is my rankings at the moment. it's a really good album and still incredibly impressive EV did this at this point in his career.
