And for the record, and I think this is important, those of us who like the song, of which there are clearly legion, are not responding to every dislike post with something along the lines of "You are clearly wrong." Even how production sounds is a matter of opinion built upon different ears, different levels of hearing loss, different minds, different equipment, etc. etc. etc.

A little thought experiment that’s gonna make people here pissed, but whatever, that’s why we have conversation:

Nothing As It Seems (Binaural) —> Half Full (Riot Act): when NAIS came out, Pearl Jam had no correlation with this song and any other song in their catalogue. They built this different kind of atmosphere that Mike plays over brilliantly. The next time they came close to that after Binaural is by turning to that similar atmosphere but making it more anthemic and desperate in Half Full - more of a rock song but has some of the atmospheric elements there.

Dance of the Clairvoyants —> Dark Matter: again, there’s nothing really all that similar to DotC in their catalogue, but there are some deep bass and drum machine like synthetic sounds happening. This one is groove focused (and probably my favorite song they’ve done since at least Binaural). Dark Matter takes that echoey drum sound, some deep bass, and turns it into more of a rock song. I mean I think the atmosphere is almost like taking DotC and mushing it up with Quick Escape, even if I don’t like the song as much as those (yet I still do love the track), is this perhaps a stab at pushing this sound in a new direction, perhaps to see if it sticks?

I dont see NAIS and Half Full being into the same category, and while i understand Dotc and DM being kinda tied to, i also think DM has more elements from previous PJ than Dance.

I still hear some Riot Act and Binaural there, specially in the guitar tones. But mostly it also feels it could be a lost song from Gigaton or even some stuff they left out from Vs too, perhaps thats why i like so much.

And im still blown with Matt´s performance, he really is doing all kinds of interesting things all the time.

do you think they need a comprehensive recounting of which songs are better than Dark Matter and which songs Dark Matter is better than?

I listen to my FLAC copy on Sennheiser HD600s through a Fiio Q3 preamp and I still think "Dark Matter" sounds really bad. I also have the 'Golden Ear Certificate of Supreme Auditory Excellence', bestowed upon me by the International Acoustic Virtuosos Society (IAVS) in association with the Global Auditory Health Consortium (GAHC) so both my hearing and my gear are unimpeachable and my opinion holds extra weight

so how did this engineer win multiple grammies if the sound is that bad? i assume the dark matter production is not an outlier? serious question. are IAVS and GHAC not voting members of the academy?

My understanding is they are voting members of Jorge's ass.

And the more I think about it, the more I like the aggressive mix of this song. If the whole album is that way, maybe it won't work for certain songs, but I liked how Earthling sounded so I imagine I'll be fine with the rest of it.

Wotman is primarily a producer not an engineer and his Grammy wins are for production, not engineering.
