I prefer The Long Way to a few others on the record. I do think it’s interesting that’s the only song that came in completed before they started actually making the record. Gives me hope for a Watt-PJ record.

Earthling is a very straightforward album compared to many others, but Pearl Jam has 11 studio albums and Lost Dogs. Eddie has another solo record and two soundtracks. Unless you listen to Earthling every day for a year eventually it'll drop into the catalog. At that point the question isn't 'do these songs have more nuance than other songs'. You won't reach for Earthlings for a slow burn record, or a careful headphones listen. If you want a well feel good straight ahead set of songs, you'll grab Earthling, and if the songs are well crafted and engaging and well written and performed (and they are) you'll be satisfied and it will endure.

If I were to take a guess, it is the “don’t people realize this album sucks yet” conception, as if the cool folks are hanging out in the back of the room watching and waiting for the rest of us to come to our senses. Without the benefit of tone that one could hear, it can either be taken as a joke or taken as dismissive of others’ joy for this album.

I agree that I will likely reach for this one long term when the itch for a breezy rock album hits - which is surely does. No less a piece of art than another album. Moments like The Dark and Try feel truly inspired to me, even if they don’t contain a million sonic nuances, even if I like that too. It’s all a matter of mood. Sometimes a Hershey bar hits the spot perfect, even when there’s a Snickers with much more stuff in it right next to it.

I'm in a spot where I've found that I haven't really returned to the album beyond those top 3 or 4 that really stood out to me, but I like those top 3 or 4 significantly more than I would have thought before I heard the record.

I happen to really dig more than this, but I feel this is the baseline for an album that many thought was going to be kind of a turd going in. Great success Borat thumbs up.

I mean, I totally get why I had that impression; I'm not really sure about their thinking when it came to the choice of singles on this record. All three of them (but particularly Long Way and The Haves) are on the lower end of the record.

I still love about half this album and appreciate almost the rest of it, but the brittle production has made me pass over it in more recent days

What language are you specifically talking about?

I've seen only a few pretty mild comments saying the album is awful, those comments being overwhelmingly outweighed by slavish praise (pages upon pages of it).

I really don't get the reaction in response to the few murmurs of dissent, both here and in the live thread.

You're not missing much, it's sub-Into The Wild noodly folk stuff. Not a single melody in any of the songs and Ed is very breathy.

yeah it's this, and I think the response "our dissenting voices are in the minority so I have no idea what you're talking about and you must be imagining a snarky and condescending tone" is disingenuous

I know we've done these arguments to death several times now and there's nothing new to say.

I guess I really enjoy contrary takes on things I enjoy. It seems kind of essential to subject my preferences to a kind of trial by fire, a stress test. I think I'm always naturally sceptical of things I enjoy, like there's an uphill battle to convince myself I haven't made an embarrassing error. It often helps shape and refine why I like what I do, and what in particular grabs me; it could well be what repels someone else.

If hearing someone say "hey, this album sucks and I suspect you'll soon mostly agree" causes you to doubt the intensity of your feelings, maybe linger and explore that sense of doubt for a while!

it doesn't, it's just really joyless and annoying
