And the more I think about it, the more I like the aggressive mix of this song. If the whole album is that way, maybe it won't work for certain songs, but I liked how Earthling sounded so I imagine I'll be fine with the rest of it.

Earthling, to me, had a range of mixing styles for different songs; "Invincible" sounds nothing like "Good and Evil" sounds nothing like "Picture"; it'd be nice if the album displayed that sonic range

my only worry is that Lightning Bolt had that very varied approach too, but there was no unifying sonic thread, it was all over the place; I think we'll get better than that but yeah

My sense it will be much better. I would probably take Dark Matter over any song on LB. If you compare lead singles, I think Dark Matter is much stronger than Mind Your Manners - which I think is one of the better songs on LB. My sense is that we’ll be happy with the energy of this album, possibly disappointed it doesn’t have the nuance of a Gigaton, which still feels to me like a very cohesive album despite their very varied palette.

To compare the Grammy ballot to a regular election ballot, I imagine the categories like "Album of the Year" being comparable to "President" or "Governor," while categories like "Best Engineered Album" are comparable to "Third District School Board Treasurer." People have been listening to the presidential candidates run their mouths all year long, but the ballot is likely the first time some voters have even seen some of the more obscure categories. To that end, people either (a) abstain, or (b) make choices based on things like name recognition, affiliations, etc. And of course, even in categories where voters are much more familiar with the candidates, we know they sometimes still make really dumb choices...

That's not to say that everyone who wins a Grammy inherently sucks, just that such an award doesn't necessarily signify a thoughtful, considered, informed voting process.

An interesting quote from the article:

One of the biggest problems with the Grammy voting committee is it's so big that many voting members are not familiar with every category. What this means is that big names and Top 40 artists are more likely to get nominated from the entry pool and win in the voting rounds. As Rob Kenner, a Grammy screener, wrote for Complex:

"I soon learned another unwritten rule during private conversations with other committee members: be careful about green-lighting an album by someone who was really famous if you don’t want to see that album win a Grammy. Because famous people tend to get more votes from clueless Academy members, regardless of the quality of their work."

it’s enough to make you think awards aren’t directly correlated to quality

but still, if pearl jam wins a grammy Ill be excited as hell

It's always fun when someone you like wins, and when an artist that is special to you enjoys a moment of heightened cultural interest. The RRHOF is silly but that was a fun few months to be a fan of the band.

man, i can totally picture ed gracefully accepting a grammy and now i dont know what to think about any of this
