Cos he could yanno
He could do anything, I suppose. But this is a totally different animal. Trek was a reboot meant to reinvigorate a flatlined franchise.

SW is a straight up sequel to an already existing film series that JJ loves with all his heart and soul. The EU stuff has been thrown out, that shit is no longer canon. So the only canon/timeline stuff you have to worry about is Episodes IV - Episode VI.

If he's going to tweak anything I'd expect it to come at the expense the prequel timeline/canon. Which, frankly, I'd be fine with. I'd LOVE to see Disney throw those movies out entirely and just re-do/rewrite/reboot Episodes I-III.

if you would have just applied the drive you showed in searching for that post to googling clone wars, none of this would have happened

Explanation?
There was an animated film in 2008. It didn't do very well, but they expanded it anyway into a series with the same animation style.

I never saw it. But I've heard it's pretty terrible. Which is why I never bothered.

I think the big difference is that Star Trek already had time travel built into its mythos, so having alternate timelines and junk like that wasn't too much of a stretch. I'm thinking hard, but I can't remember any Star Wars stuff (expanded universe or not) that uses time travel as a plot device, so that's out. But he could certainly do two other things: bring back dead characters through clones (which was a thing even before the prequels) or have characters that died in the OT come back to life through "saved at the last minute" sort of stuff (there's a strong, strong rumor of this happening in the new film, too). I, for one, am happy to see Porkins come back.
Spoiler: show

I'm more than prepared for dead characters coming back to life. I fully expect some level of that to happen, unfortunately. But, yeah, I'm with you. I really don't see him playing the time travel / alternate timeline card.
