Supposedly the latter is the technically correct way, and I often hear it said that way in audiobooks, but I've never heard anyone say it that way IRL

It’s a short i, just google it. Half the people who narrate audiobooks are morons - i listened to a book about sci fi/fantasy movies from the 80s a few weeks ago and the guy spends the whole book pronouncing Conan the Barbarian as if he’s Conan O’Brien.
