The Substance. It's hard to deny the movie's more gleefully unhinged moments of body-horror spectacle, and there are obviously some striking images throughout. But it is also insultingly obvious and heavy-handed, vigorously underlining points (both thematic and narrative) so the audience won't miss them even though they're spelled out in a giant golden billboard with multiple brightly lit arrows pointed straight at it. It's completely witless, and burns through its bag of ideas in about an hour. Unfortunately that's less than half of its runtime. Demi Moore is very good though

Revisiting Bringing out the Dead. Man I cannot relate to any part of this. I think I’m too well-adjusted and too averse to city life for any of this to resonate.

Two thumbs up on Blink Twice. The first half was especially excellent, and the rest was solid enough to make it overall great.
Visually wonderful. The editing was very well done. Sound was great as well. All the technical categories were top notch. Hard to believe this is her directing debut.

My wife and her sister went to see this (without me! ) last week. They enjoyed it. Said it would make a better play than film. But I'm still really pumped to see it now that it's on Netflix. I might watch it tonight.

I just watched it. I liked it, it's sweet and has an interesting way of playing with how you view each of the sisters as the story progresses. My only "problem" with it is the writing, particularly for Carrie Coon's character. Her dialogue is often stilted and kind of clunky, the type of writing that makes evident the artificiality of it all; clearly a rehearsed, memorized monologue rather than a naturalistic expression. You can especially hear it in interjections: "We've been waiting several weeks, you see, to get this sorted out. And I don't see what the problem is, to tell you the truth, because the paperwork was filed months ago." Stuff like that, really sounds like words off a page. This is especially clear in the very first lines of the movie, but then as the film progresses you kind of settle into it. In this regard I see why your wife and her sister said that, because that kind of writing and delivery are maybe more suited for the stage, where theatricality is expected and less jarring because you've already made several mental leaps to buy into the artificiality and pantomime of it all, whereas dramatic acting in film has been dominated by naturalism since the 70s? I actually have no idea if any of this makes sense, I'm high as a kite right now

"His Three Daughters" made me weep uncontrollably, maximum emotional damage, Jesus Christ; an acting masterclass, it just goes to show what Elizabeth Olsen, Natasha Lyonne & Carrie Coon can do in an apartment with a great script, & quietly snuck in as a film of the year contender for me; I've loved Elizabeth Olsen ever since Martha Marcy May Marlene, and I'm so happy to see her in another serious drama, she's brilliant

counterpoint to Jorge's one about Coon's character being stilted and rehearsed: yes I kind of agree, but I felt that that was just her character; she was a planner, she was stoic, almost corporate in the way she imagined herself as the "mom" of the family, always at work, taking on more than everyone else; whether that was true or not is debatable (and I think the movie had some wonderful moments that questioned it, like Lyonne's character's single tear while she, iirc, was speaking) but I feel very much that her "rehearsed" and "unnatural" way of being, as if she was always in a work meeting, was just her way of coping with (and hiding?) her grief... until she couldn't anymore, and her facade started to melt, because it had to

I love "two or three people in a room" movies and yeah this one would work as a play but I like that we got the movie

I love those kinds of stories, too. I'm really looking forward to seeing this but I didn't get a chance to watch it tonight...
Hopefully next week. Glad you liked it though. That gets me even more excited!

Jackie Brown, for the first time in over 5 years. I love it so much
) last week. They enjoyed it. Said it would make a better play than film. But I'm still really pumped to see it now that it's on Netflix. I might watch it tonight.
